Building so many ships for Napoleon was bound to lead to trouble, and it came, albeit perhaps nothing like the conflict any other nation would have faced. I have always found the debates on this topic interesting as they generally seem to miss a vital issue, the number of hulls American yards where laying down for the French in the prelude to the conflict to number of hulls they where laying down for Britain just after. I guess a similar issue would have arose if America in the prelude to WW1 or WW2 where supplying Germany with equivalent numbers of warships and war material. Britain and America have made their fair share of mistakes with each other, do you really think there is still anything that needs to be redressed? |

Say they were discussing Russia. My gut feeling is No but say they were. What an interesting conversation that would be. Russia as we all know in terms of general military capability has dropped the ball considerably and is nowhere near as strong as years ago. The US would no doubt beat them in a one on one conventional war in all but the most extremely cold places on the planet. However Russia has kept a lot of their mass destruction aces and could defend themselves now with more stealth and precision than they have in the past if they feel backed into a corner. In other words in a different way they are as strong as they were "back in the day" How do the USA & it allies etc approach this? Dangerous even thinking about it. But in saying that the discussion is probably more about other issues closer to hand and not about a direct conflict with Russia. Maybe a proxy but not direct conflict The next hot war will be really hot as in thermonuclear nobody gets out alive war. In the prelude to WW2, they thought the next war would knock mankind back to the stone age.. The notion that the bomber would always get through rang true, and those bombers would be armed with WMDs.. They had the same fears we do now, and yet, here we are, not knocked back into the stone age, yet still fearing those weapons. I believe the same fears will exist after another global war, after we have unleashed another newer, even more scary weapon.. This seems to be the lot of mankind. |
