Seismic unrest at El Hierro Island
Update Mon 25 Mar 08:17
The likelihood of a new submarine eruption in the near future is increasing. Earthquakes and pulsating strong tremor continued with little changes, indicators of magma intruding into new dikes in the western rift zone. There is also a trend towards stronger quakes (about 20 magnitude 3+ events including a M4 this morning) and shallower earthquakes (many at around 11-12 km depth today). This suggests that magma is slowly breaking pathways upwards, i.e. towards the seafloor.

Landslides and tsunamiThere is evidence of at least three major landslides that have affected El Hierro in the last few hundred thousand years.[8] The most recent of these was the 'El Golfo' landslide that occurred about 15 thousand years ago, involving collapse of the northern flank of the island. The landslide formed the El Golfo valley and created a debris avalanche with a volume of 150–180 km3.

Doom pending as usual Pen. Just in case though I checked how high above sea level my house is...it's not 150 feet, but I am a little in-land so I guess my family would not get soakers.

Still...not too sure how far in-land a 150 foot wave would actually go?

Something like 12 miles I think. My son lives in Boston about 7 miles inland with no car (by choice). He will have to run inland a few miles.

Re: Seismic unrest at El Hierro Island
I'm on the Island as you know, about 100 feet above sea level, but only 10 miles from the sea. The whole Island would be in real trouble if a wave large enough came our way.
