I posted this a few weeks ago, its ground deforfation at one of the meters near Hekla. It shows a steady trend to the north-west. If you notice the normal east motion, it started moving slowly north and then west in October to December timeframe.

this one is a little more pronounced.

Heres one for the ISAK station, jumped up 20mm in last week.

It really bothers me that you can see quakes on the tremor graphs but not the map. I guess they are triple checking their math.

Sorry, sorry this is all my fault. Every year we fly on holiday for three out of the past four a volcano has gone up in Iceland. Last year no holiday, no ash cloud. this year we're booked for August so it'll go off in July.

Hekla “news service” latest scoop : IMO has brought back online the forth (4) SIL for monitoring the greater Hekla area. These are HAU from the west, fedgar ( [link to hraun.vedur.is] from the north, VAT from the east and MJO from the south. Nothing EQ wise then can escape the sharp eyes of the IMO staff. [link to hraun.vedur.is]
Fedgar is not on this overall map.

you know my point of view - and if the eruption begins, then as an outpouring of the fissures in the vicinities of Hekla. so imo very unlikely that these devices will have time to tell us a lot about his approach, except for a very short time before it...
a similar behaviour in my opinion there are observed regularly enough and long time ...

It is unusual (not strange), HEK is unusual, no upward trend at the moment is suggesting the “de-strain” is equal to “normal-upswing” (per the Burfell strain), when BUR goes down (+ about 1 hr delay) then HEK will likely drop like a stone. This HEK “down only” trend for several days now, might suggest something is “giving slowly in” (letting go or moving apart) but if that is Hekla per se, or the Iceland “drift zone” (Dead Zone) moving, or if this slowly decreasing strain is indicator of eventual Hekla boom time, time will only tell. No more quakes today, then it´s past time for the next one?, as if they are some thing ongoing, they seem have stopped. Still wainting for quake number 8.

Translated: National Commissioner of Police and the Commissioner of Hvolsvöllur declare confidence level of civil eruptions of Hekla

The Icelandic Meteorological Office has informed the National Commissioner for Civil unusual Seismicity at Hekla. IMO has also increased monitoring points Hekla to yellow due to air traffic, which means that the volcano show unusual activity.

Uncertainty level civil means for increased monitoring of the actions of that at a later stage could lead to health and human safety, environmental or building will be threatened. To describe the level of uncertainty is part of the processes in the organization of civil protection to ensure formal communication and information. Uncertainty level is declared to inform the appropriate emergency and is a process in civil emergency planning and the lowest of the three.

In light of this, will the National Police Commissioner and the Commissioner of Hvolsvöllur warn people on journeys while Hekla uncertainty level is valid.

There is still yellow alert on Hekla and will remain untill next week. What yuo see is not Hekla related, some rather strong quakes at Langjökull, 2.4R, and storm waves are pounding the coastline (coarse looking strain) and such. Hekla is NOT stirring (yet).

Hekla plot getting livlier. [link to hraun.vedur.is]

The first spike is the 3,2 magn. quake which just happened at part of the Langjökull swarm (8 quakes sofar), but I still believe in a tectonic origin. [link to en.vedur.is] as the red component is not moving on the next SIL station’s tremor plot: [link to hraun.vedur.is]

Hi everyone. Earthquake 3.5 in Langjokull. This is a region just 30km north from where I am!

I haven’t felt anything !!!, so this earthquake was probably deep.

This region is quite dormant, but earthquakes have occurred in past months in the Geysir area. Well, there is geothermal activity on a few spots, Geysir is one of them. But this area is further north.

These earthquakes can be tectonic or volcanic, I do not know. The volcanic system is Hveravellir and many eruptions have occurred there, mostly forming shield volcanoes and large lava eruptions, but no significant explosive behavior. Last one was probably 1000-2000 years ago. Just a few dozen eruptions in the Holocene. This can be, most likely, a fracture that occurred in a rock, A volcanic swarm would have more deep earthquakes I would guess.

What seems to be volcanic is the earthquakes under Vatnajokull: plenty of deep ones and quite moderate size. Under Grimsvotn, Kistufell, Hamarinn, Kverfjoll and Askja. Just about everywhere around the hotspot! This seems like a pulse of magma and making intrusions over those volcanoes. Any of them is quite likely to erupt within the next years. We expect Grimsvotn, and can expect also some minor eruption at Askja (likely anywhere between VEI1 and 3). Then there is the subglacial behavior happening under Hamarinn but nothing major so far. Kverfjoll is another volcano that sooner or later will have an eruption (likely in the range VEI2-4).

Some earthquakes today in Iceland might be linked to magmatic movements: as usual the ones in Askja and north of Bárdarbunga (now even deeper than usual), also some very deep quakes at Kverfjoll and also deep earthquake swarm east of Grimsey. This I thought it could be tectonic but the earthquakes are just too deep, around 18km deep. However there is some regions in Tjornes seismic zone, where some possible subduction could be happening; this could be it. Nevertheless, there has been volcanic activity in the area, and it could happen again.

Other than that, so many people looking for Hekla, but it seems the action is happening really elsewhere: Askja, Kverfjoll and Kistufell (north of Bárdarbunga) are also having their run-up to their eruptions, and plenty much more ignored and overlooked than Hekla. I mean, Askja and Kistufell have inflation and plenty deep earthquakes and often swarms. What more do you need? With Askja, we only expect a small VEI2 fissural eruption, but Kistufell could be headed for an eruption with a larger volume of lava released (that area only has the largest shield volcano in Iceland and extremely large lava fields).

Likewise for Kverfjoll, a volcano that clearly also shows it is running towards an eruption, after some 80 years of sleep. Kverfjoll has usually small explosive eruptions, with some Gjálp-like lava eruptions.

By expecting an eruption on these volcanoes in “soon” I might within the next decades in Kverfjoll, and within the next few years (probably) at Askja. Kistufell has more rarer eruptions.

Earthquake swarm east of Grímsey island (TFZ)

Posted on March 31, 2013 by Jon Frimann

Today at 05:25 UTC a earthquake swarm started east of Grímsey island. But this island is located in the Tjornes Fracture Zone. The largest earthquake today is a magnitude 2.8. No larger earthquakes have taken place so.
Earthquake activity is common in this area of Iceland so this is nothing unusual. This earthquake swarm is not connected to any volcano activity that I know of. If anything major happens. I am going to write a blog post about it soon as I can do so.

Total Iceland quakes per day has increased, saying there is more movement in the rock these days than last weeks, these were rather quiet. This increase in number and larger size of eartquakes can be taken as ceratin sign… perhaps this movement can tip the scales at Hekla and rip it open. I think this can happen *not expert*hf
