Re: I went to Walmart on Sunday and only two checkout clerks, seven people called in and shelves unstocked, then found this article
I went to a Northeast Texas Walmart on Sunday around 5:00 p.m. and only two checkout clerks there and shelves unstocked; one on the express and one on a regular checkout. Very few people in the store. I knew the lady that was ringing mine up and she said seven people called in.

Then I ran across this article and the employees are saying:

"it’s piling up in aisles and in the back of stores because Wal-Mart doesn’t have enough bodies to restock the shelves"

I don't believe it's just a staffing problem. Maybe other countries aren't shipping their crappy products anymore. Something is going on.

It sounds like just another example of inane corporate greed:

From the article above:
"..When you tell retailers they have to invest in people, the typical response is: ‘It’s just too expensive,’” Ton said.

Adding five full-time employees to Wal-Mart’s (WMT) U.S. supercenters and discount stores would add about a half- percentage point to selling, general and administrative expenses, according to an analysis by Poonam Goyal, a Bloomberg Industries senior analyst based in Skillman, New Jersey.

Assuming the workers earned the federal minimum wage and industry standards for health benefits, the added costs would amount to about $448 million a year, she said. In the year ended Jan. 31, Wal-Mart generated $17 billion in profit on revenue of $469.2 billion."

The numbers tell the story.

With so many people out of work, it looks like the bottom line continues to be profit over people.

BALONEY ! I went to the WallyWorld in Sarasota Florida on Saturday and it was packed with people! Lines were all backed up at the check-out and lots of employees working!
Obviously someone is full of fecal matter !

 Quoting: Nam Marine 33540214

...BUT Sarasota county is one of the top five or six 'prosperous' counties in the state of Florida....AND.. it is still snowbird season AND the middle of spring break season...... a month from now it will be just like the rest of these places. MY husband is a service plumber and works in Sarasota.........for us it is feast in the winter and famine in the summer..... money pours in from the northEAST and midwest in October and drains out in April.

We, however, live in Bradenton.... 20 miles north of Sarasota. There are 3 Wally Worlds with in 10 minutes of my home. They are a cesspool.... I hate them and avoid them like the plague. Never enough checkers.... aisles filthy... and their favorite thing is to put one price on the counter and charge a higher price at the check out. I would watch them like a hawk... if I caught them... they corrected it with an apology.... but how many millions do they get extra from unsuspecting customers.... so unless there is just no other way... I do not go there!!

I hate Walmart. The one near me just finished a huge expansion to include groceries. Now the front of the store has a bunch of checkout isles, but there are hardly any cashiers. The place is aggravating beyond belief.

Walmart here, not enough cashiers and noticed more poeple getting less stuff and just running thru 20 items or less line.
Plus, entering out Walmart it smells sour, like meat rotting. Some days worse than others. Its in the entrance, where the deli section is.....
On one occasion I overheard one of the deli guys as he was dispatching some sliced ham that he would not buy any of the deli meats.

Havent seen the guy since.

I think it's the economy. If you live in an area hit hard by the on-going recession, your Walmart is going to be hit as well.

Here I don't notice much difference other than an apparent slight loss of business.

And another factor here is the ever present Dollar Store that is even cheaper and shoddier than Walmart but what are people to do when they have no money?

They are buying the cheapest they can find. And there are some brand names at these stores and those sell for a little less than even Walmart. I buy cleaning supplies there myself.

I was at Walmart a few days ago. My daughter and I was returning a disc player of some kind that of course was made in China. Needless to say it was no good and very disappointing for my girl. At any rate the lines where long and managed to get out at the return production section and was able to pay for the other items we bought. Owners of these companies should return production to America. The Chinese have no quality in there products. Perhaps it takes time to develop. Mean time, Americans are not making the things they could be making putting the Chinese to work and the Americans out of work. As we all know. No history lesson here just saying.

But then thanks to our labor unions and massive regulations, the disc player would cost $500!

Bad situation without easy solution.

Many years ago I lurked on a bulletin board for WalMart employees, and they were saying how pallets of food, like frozen meat, dairy products, etc. would be delivered, and would sit outside in the sun and have to all be thrown out before they even hit the sales floor. They said this was a very common occurrence. Disturbing but very believable.

I live in Northeast Texas and I was at my local Walmart Sunday also.
Found the same thing. Really strange! I was there late too. Normally they have the freight out and are restocking, but not that night.
 Quoting: Vixi

I think they are always understaffed on Sunday.

Was there last year when there were only a few checkout lanes open -- the lines long. Went to the customer service counter to find out what was going on... they all deffered me to the 'Asst Manager' who was on duty that day -- said they would send him over to where I was waiting in line.

I went back over to where my wife was in line -- thinking he would never have the balls to show-up... but sure enough, this little fat guy walks up to me so I could ream his ass in front of 50 people.

His response was... he was sorry, they had underestimated the number of customers for the time of day -- and he had no one else available to put on the counters. He waddled off, and we waited in like everyone else did. Not much of a choice.

I think maybe corporate greed, country greed, personal greed and just plain greed in general is teaching us all a lesson. Corporations need to treat employees better give them full-time work and benefits and a decent pay scale and pay CEO's less and price their products more affordably. Countries need to have smaller government and tax burden with more of the tax revenues being spent on infrastructure improvement and repair. Individuals need to get off the government dole, spend their money on the things they need not what their inner rockstar tells them they must have. Now that I've said this, not one of these things will happen because we are not on God's Earth but in the world of GREED.

I was in a Walmart on Saturday last. It was 9:45.

I was returning two bags of some really nasty compost...
brand name: Garden Compost (they crap looked like ground up
used/burned charcoal. Anyway I drove up to the garden section and the stupid gate was closed. I had to go in the main doors to the cuss-to-mer service center.

I asked to speak to the store manager.

In our conversation I asked why the gate to the garden center was locked. He said for security reasons. I asked if it was because he didn't have enough staffing and he said yes. I said well that is a management problem. I was told I would have to bring the compost to the customer service center to return it. I said: great! My car is parking down there in the gardening/compost area for more purchases and you want me to haul this return compost to the customer center and then go all the way back down there to purchase more compost and then back to the check out lanes in the middle of the store.
Answer: yes.

I asked why can't you get somebody down there to the garden center and open the darn gate since you have somebody standing right here that needs the gate open to conduct business with your store. Store manager said the gate doesn't open til 10 a.m. I said can't you fudge it a for 15 minute. By this time I was about fuming.

This is not the first time this very thing has happened to me at that store. In face it is the third time.

I said why do you not open the gate til 10 a.m. when the rest of the store is already open....Home Depot right next door has their gate open and the other walmart in town doesn't even have a gate......they have a door to the garden center and if their store is open that garden door is open.

Staffing he says.

Even when the gate IS OPEN.........there is never a clerk at that checkout. You have to go hunt for one to come check you out.

If China gets mad at the US, starts using their industry for war effort instead of junk products, or creates trade sanctions..then wouldn't Walmart be out of business the next day?
 Quoting: The Loophole

I run a small retail business. I have to place some of my orders 6-8 months ahead of shipment. Each year the deadlines get earlier and earlier. They need to know months in advance because there are increasing labor shortages in China as the 20 somethings wake up and realize they want to live in the "western world" and refuse to work the factory jobs. Driving the cost of goods up.

The past two years I have seen a shift the other direction. This year especially. They are now extending their deadlines months past prior years. Begging for orders. I am very ambivalent about placing as many orders as I do usually this year. For them to be extending deadlines, and offering discounts on top of their normal ones lets me know that I am not the only one who is hesitant.

Also I have found that I am having to manufacture more and more of my product myself. I am very lucky to have the skills and ingenuity to do so.

Manufacturing needs to come back in the US. Stuff from china is not cheap anymore. I have found that my local grocery is just as cheap if sometimes not cheaper than Walmart. Heck I have even found cheaper items at WHOLE FOODS than Walmart recently.
