Satellite phone, yes.
 Quoting: Switchblade

Looks like a nuke test from Russia, in their remote northern regions near the sea.

That explains both the sound and EM disruption of radio waves, and yes it's believable that it could be felt in that base, because the radio waves are traveling better on sea than land.

There are 3 possibilities here:
1) Meteor, volcano, or other chaotic non-man-made event
2) EMP weapon test
3) I am getting the rope, chair, and honey ready for OP
 Quoting: The Comedian

That's ok we dug a 5 1/2 ft deep hole hole near a huge red ant mound for you. One of more infamous ways the Apache dealt with people like you was burying them up to their necks with their heads exposed and pouring honey on them.

The one I really like is the wet rawhide staking to the ground. As the rawhide dried, it shrank, pulling the arms and legs of the offender painfully out of their sockets. They were usually left for the coyotes and pumas to finish off.

Not so funny, is asshole.

Lots of meteors last night and this morning..could be a meteor strike??

Also, lots of drilling rigs in the arctic ..some offshore ones that are really dangerous, my daughter used to work on one ..got hazard pay...because they were within 5 miles of one of those big refinery type rigs that if they explode takes out everything around it for 7 miles or more.

Re: UPDATED: Holy Shit, Big Explosion in Arctic!
This does have a certain internal cred.

Speed of sound in ice is abut 2 miles per second and Russia is about 1000 miles from Barneo. In ten minutes the distance would be 1200 miles.

This would pretty much rule out an EMP weapon. Thats high altitude and no appreciable blast wave.

My guess would be methane perhaps released by the melting ice as the artic near Russia is known to be seriously outgasssing.

Could have been detonated by a metoer or plane.

It would mess up radio communications like the one near Indoneisa which weighed in at 50 kT and created EMP which took out some of the power grid in Oz. It messes up the Van Allen belts and thats why HF has trouble bouncing if iuts HF and not satellite but it could mess up something in low earth orbit like Iridium.

An EMP would destroy electronic circuits though, wouldn't it?

It would leave modern cars dead, lights out, etc.

An EMI would simply cause signal disruption.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8547422

An EMP is not something perfectly defined in that if it doesn't fry a car then is isn't one. An EMP is just a pulse of electromagnetic radiation. Someone can build a tiny EMP generator that just causes an audible click on a turned on radio. Or it could decimate all complex electronics permanently for hundreds of miles. It depends on the power of it.

Its like saying something isn't "an explosion" unless it destroys buildings.

Imagining growling ice, is it close or distant? Does growling ice have a specific meaning like pre earthquake like shift or does it mean some big boat ran into it or is there something that always follows the sound of growling ice that he is talking about. honey? why honey?
 Quoting: WindyMind

I have hard ice growling many times in the past and it usually means nothing more than a floating or moving floe grating against another piece of ice. This in of itself means nothing, and could have been misinterpreted by the inexperienced tourist as having to do with the flash of light and/or explosion. I doubt it did

The Earth cannot be hollow. All of these hollow Earth myths originate from the hallucinations of a single man experiencing hypothermia. None of the others on his expedition recall any similar incident. Having experienced it myself, I can tell you the dreams and hallucinations are so incredibly realistic and detailed, they cannot be separated from fact in your mind positively and you will have a tendency to swear they are real, defending their genuine nature to the end..

I was not referring to the speed of waves, but their propagation, which is higher on sea than land.

Satellite phones are on microwave frequencies, in direct connection with satellites (vertically triangulated signals).

VHF is much lower frequencies, and are horizontally propagated signals to and fro GROUND antennas.

Hence why it's possible that horizontal wave EMPs will not disrupt satellite phones.

Unity is the great goal toward which humanity moves irresistibly. But it becomes fatal, destructive of the intelligence, the dignity, the well-being of individuals and peoples whenever it is formed without regard to liberty, either by violent means or under the authority of any theological, metaphysical, political, or even economic idea. That patriotism which tends toward unity without regard to liberty is an evil patriotism, always disastrous to the popular and real interests of the country it claims to exalt and serve. Often, without wishing to be so, it is a friend of reaction – an enemy of the revolution, i.e., the emancipation of nations and men.

He said it was a deep growl from the ice, he said nothing about motion, though I can tell you from experience it is difficult to feel the motion of the ice, vibration yes but motion no, the only real way you have to know if your location has changed is to use GPS.
