possible he was looking towards Iceland and not russia, but it looks like nothing from that volcano, no idea at all.

he didn't really sound too worried about it, just that it happened and the radios weren't working right or at all.

he sounded more concerned when he was explaining the ice.
 Quoting: Switchblade

If he didn't sound too concerned, why start your post with, "holy shit"?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2717277

Because he sounded concerned enough to merit a post IMO
 Quoting: Switchblade

Also because if something big is happening in the Arctic it is likely the USA or Russia being stupid (historically speaking of course)

dont you suspect most of the interest in this thread comes from people worried by *hoaxster ray brown about asteroids?

How did he describe the ice movement?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34257118

He said it was a deep growl from the ice, he said nothing about motion, though I can tell you from experience it is difficult to feel the motion of the ice, vibration yes but motion no, the only real way you have to know if your location has changed is to use GPS.

I suspect this as well however for someone that live there 8 months of the year you would think that it wouldn't be a big issue to them either.
Unity is the great goal toward which humanity moves irresistibly. But it becomes fatal, destructive of the intelligence, the dignity, the well-being of individuals and peoples whenever it is formed without regard to liberty, either by violent means or under the authority of any theological, metaphysical, political, or even economic idea. That patriotism which tends toward unity without regard to liberty is an evil patriotism, always disastrous to the popular and real interests of the country it claims to exalt and serve. Often, without wishing to be so, it is a friend of reaction – an enemy of the revolution, i.e., the emancipation of nations and men.

Satellite phone, yes.
 Quoting: Switchblade

Looks like a nuke test from Russia, in their remote northern regions near the sea.

That explains both the sound and EM disruption of radio waves, and yes it's believable that it could be felt in that base, because the radio waves are traveling better on sea than land.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1392733

radio waves travel at 186000 miles per second regardless of sea or land

....and a satellite phone is still a vhf radio transciever
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1691552

I was not referring to the speed of waves, but their propagation, which is higher on sea than land.

Satellite phones are on microwave frequencies, in direct connection with satellites (vertically triangulated signals).

VHF is much lower frequencies, and are horizontally propagated signals to and fro GROUND antennas.

Hence why it's possible that horizontal wave EMPs will not disrupt satellite phones.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1392733

Agreed, that's why antenna orientation is critical on satellite phone handsets.. its a very narrow uplink beam and if your off, you miss the bird.. not so much with inmarsat because of larger footprints but it does not work in the polar areas.. Iridium has its own problems with short satellite periods from being in low earth orbit. Iridium also does not require a GPS fix to determine its assigned spot beam like Inmarsat.. so it works when GPS is down, others do not unless manually programmed from the handset.

If the site is using a fixed antenna installation or Open port, it would be even more robust then a 9555 handset. That's why most telemetry systems use the Iridium short burst data modem with a high quality antenna.. its almost impossible to not complete the transaction unless the antenna is obstructed by objects line of sight to the bird or if the antenna is temporarily submerged in water.. then it just waits and re-sends.

Re: UPDATED: Holy Shit, Big Explosion in Arctic!
In a nuclear EMP the weapon gammas and x-rays knock off electrons and create a charge separation which acts as an antenna. The original Starfish Prime took down all orbiting satellites because it enhanced the Van Allen Belts by ionizing the upper atmosphere. Another effect is to wipe out HF communications probably from disturbing the Heaviside layer.

Its not as clear how a large fuel-air explosion would create EMP and disturb radio communications but it would probably blow some of the top of the atmosphere out into space if its large enough to send a shock wave 1000 miles through the ice.

If it happened they have seen it from space via the IR sats and are probably analyzing it as a potential nuke.

The big danger would be the alleged Russian fail safe launch system which fires without human intervention in response to certain seismic signals indicating nuclear impacts in Russia if its still active today as it was in the Cold War. That should definitely be reviewed as this is likely to happen again.

Iridium handsets cover the polar caps, look it up.
 Quoting: EscapeVelocity

Nearly every SatCom provider does.
 Quoting: Switchblade

No,

Only Iridium handsets provide true global coverage..

Inmarsat access for handsets stops just before the poles and your antenna is pointed almost parallel with the ground, causing scattering with the terrain and thicker atmosphere and Thuraya does not even come close, covers only ME, Aus and EU. Globalstar is only good for duplex messaging.
