This is what happens at a level 4 virus
They say the one that was missing was probably destroyed and never logged I think they would know if it fell and had to be destroyed considering the clean up and containment method required this would be documented or in someones memory
therefore I call it stolen not accidentaly dropped and destroyed

Scott Weaver, the Galveston lab's scientific director, said Monday that a routine check last week led to the discovery that one of five small plastic vials of an obscure virus called Guanarito was missing from a locked freezer. Checks of the lab's security systems show no malfunctions and no unusual entries to the lab or the freezer since a previous inventory recorded the vial in November.

"We certainly wouldn't want to be in a position where anybody in the community felt we were trying to cover anything up," Weaver said.

The CDC receives about a dozen reports a year of lost bioterror germs and toxins, which the government calls "select agents." The CDC received 88 loss reports from 2004 to 2010, according to an article by agency staff published last year in the journal Applied Biosafety. "The final disposition of [the select agents] described in the 88 loss reports was reconciled in all but one report," the article said.

That one confirmed loss occurred during the shipment of a fungus that can cause a type of pneumonia called Valley Fever. An FBI investigation of the lost fungus package concluded it was "apparently destroyed during processing at a commercial shipping facility," the CDC researchers' article said.

Okay so they knew where it was in November it was recorded in the inventory
Then they make a statement that they dont want anyone to think this is a cover up
Then you have the CDC saying on another missing virus that they believe that one was destroyed during shipping

WTF

The virus that was in the vial missing at the Galveston lab occurs naturally in rodents in Venezuela. During harvest time, people have become infected by breathing dusty soil particles contaminated with virus excreted by the rodents, Weaver said. Of those who are sickened, he said, about one-third will die from hemorrhagic fever.

Because there is no treatment or vaccine against the virus and it can infect by being inhaled, scientists work with it only when wearing spacesuit-like gear and in Biosafety Level 4 labs, which have the highest safety and security requirements to prevent the release of infectious agents.

OKay all you people who said it couldnt get humans sick here you go please read above
It can infect you if you inhale it

Weaver said the most likely explanation for the missing vial is that it became stuck to a researcher's glove and dropped unnoticed to the lab's floor and rolled under equipment, where it was later swept up and incinerated with other lab waste.

[link to www.usatoday.com]

"There's really no possibility of anything leaving the lab in a viable form unless it is taken out intentionally," Weaver said. Even that's difficult, he said, noting that when leaving the lab, a scientist must enter a chemical decontamination shower for five minutes.

okay so it dropped on the floor and just got thrown away and destroyed without anyone knowing I call BS

I say it was taken out intentionally without their knowledge and people need to be investigated right now

What overcrowding? With earth's current population levels, there are over 5 acres of land surface on the planet for every man, woman, and child.

The problem is not that we have too many people, just that too many of them live in cities.

Eric Rodger Pianka[1] (born 23 January 1939) is an American biologist, whose work includes herpetology and evolutionary ecology.[2] His textbook, Evolutionary Ecology (1983) is considered a classic, and his writings for the general public and television appearances have made him an influential figure.[ci

"I have two grandchildren and I want them to inherit a stable Earth. But I fear for them. Humans have overpopulated the Earth and in the process have created an ideal nutritional substrate on which bacteria and viruses (microbes) will grow and prosper. We are behaving like bacteria growing on an agar plate, flourishing until natural limits are reached or until another microbe colonizes and takes over, using them as their resource. In addition to our extremely high population density, we are social and mobile, exactly the conditions that favor growth and spread of pathogenic (disease-causing) microbes. I believe it is only a matter of time until microbes once again assert control over our population, since we are unwilling to control it ourselves. This idea has been espoused by ecologists for at least four decades and is nothing new. People just don't want to hear it... I do not bear any ill will toward humanity. However, I am convinced that the world WOULD clearly be much better off without so many of us... We need to make a transition to a sustainable world. If we don't, nature is going to do it for us in ways of her own choosing. By definition, these ways will not be ours and they won't be much fun. Think about that."

Hmmmm... he has children and grandchildren so they do live on earth and therefore they are part of that population.

I will try to view it completly neutral:

Population is like a snowballsystem, it always was. But while the count of people increase, other species are extinct or on the brink of extinction. Why? Now we have more technology and medical care. People who wouldnt have survived accidents, disease or wouldnt even have been born are living to a quiet high age nowadays. If a woman cant get pregnant naturally she can try artificially.
More people equals more demand on space for living and food. So areas inhabited by other species have to fall to provide for humans. Nature brings up new disease, virus, bacterias become resistent to treatment and usually we find a cure.
The newest viruses alays occur in strongly populated areas first, for example china and that birdflu.
In the above quoted statement this guy warns about nature hitting back more strongly to find a balance again if we dont.

So, what is supposed to be done? There is nothing which can be done in my point of view, it is what it is.
We have always battled nature to live and we will continuing to do so. Until that day when nature decides to take a really hard blow at us.
But decimating population on purpose??? - I say clearly no!
Who am I and who are you to tell people what they should believe in and what not?
Everyone needs to make up his own mind and needs to have his own experiences.

Pianka then began laying out his concerns about how human overpopulation is ruining the Earth. He presented a doomsday scenario in which he claimed that the sharp increase in human population since the beginning of the industrial age is devastating the planet. He warned that quick steps must be taken to restore the planet before it's too late.

He then showed solutions for reducing the world's population in the form of a slide depicting the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. War and famine would not do, he explained. Instead, disease offered the most efficient and fastest way to kill the billions that must soon die if the population crisis is to be solved.

After praising the Ebola virus for its efficiency at killing, Pianka paused, leaned over the lectern, looked at us and carefully said, "We've got airborne 90 percent mortality in humans. Killing humans. Think about that."
