I live in the ne state and it's more like nevada here than cali. We have wild horses, wide open skies, few people, and very few lefties.
The best thing about cali is the low, fixed, property tax- everything else is spendy. My car tabs are a couple hundred bucks a year, sales tax is 10% nearly, gas is spendy, etc.
