BREAKING: Huge Ionospheric Anomaly - March 27, 2013

what could be the cause? solar activity? incoming object? both? something else? sorry, i'm not an expert on the ionosphere

Solar activity is really low right now. It's puzzling.

Id put money that is because of the negative IMF while we were being impacted by solar winds or cme whatever it was earlier. Only thing stoping it from reaching the surface of the earth was the buffeting of our atmosphere. I bet this is the physical manifestation of the negative IMF

Worth keeping an eye on. Wonder what kind of activity might be happening if any because of this in the effected area.

Notice how the anomaly is where there is daylight?

Detonation of meteor high in the atmosphere? Any reports of fireballs and explosions out of India???

Do you people realize that when the sun is shining ie. when a region of the Earth is facing the Sun, then we get MORE radiation, more electromagnetic activity than in the night?

Did you notice that the "anomaly" seems to appear wherever there is DAYLIGHT?

Please let's not panic without knowing what we are talking about. First we should take a moment to actually THINK before we start fearing and panicking and dooming right away...

here's what it is....

If I understand correctly, they send out radio waves which when reflected back from the ionosphere are measured by the radar. Obviously, the highest frequency of the reflected waves is HIGHER in the sun-facing part of the ionosphere and LOWER in the part facing away from the sun...

"The most widely used instrument for ionospheric measurement is the ionosonde. The ionosonde is essentially a high frequency radar which sends short pulses of radio energy into the ionosphere. If the radio frequency is not too high, the pulses are reflected back to earth.

The ionosonde records the time delay between transmission and reception of the pulses. By varying the frequency of the pulses (typically 1-22MHz), a record is obtained of the time delay at different frequencies. This record is referred to as an ionogram.

The highest (see note) frequency which the ionosphere will reflect vertically is called foF2. These foF2 measurements from various sites can be used to create a map of foF2."

anyone else in the UK feel incredibly warm around 4am today?
we are in Devon and we didn't have any heating on a timer through the night and it was incredibly warm for a while. Not sure how long but my wife and I both woke up extremely warm when outside temperatures were just above freezing when we went to bed and similar at 7am when we got up.
Bizarre??

I've had difficulty pulling in shortwave stations today in Vietnam, maybe this is one reason why.

looks like that coronal hole is hitting. speed [red line on that graph] should increase by another 100-300km/sec.
