I grew up in the Seattle area and now live just 20 miles south. I'll get it out of the way now...it is partly due to the rain. Although, the main problem over the yrs is soil saturation along with the removal of trees and other vegetation needed to hold the hills back. Did you see the nice green grass at the top of the hill. You know that you have to water it as nicer weather comes along which causes even more soil saturation underground. Many of the past decades landslides are due to crappy over development with no care given to natural erosion OR the sped up erosion of removing good rooted vegetation to be replaced with gravel, concrete and little tiny rooted grass lawns. Yes...Yes the earth is moving, but greedy land developers and city planners that line their pockets and have little care of what happens later have caused many of these problems. If you move to the Seattle area make sure you do your research AND do not move on top of a hill OR below one.

I have relatives on the Olympic peninsula (across from Whidbey Island to the west). They said they felt small shaking a couple times yesterday but saw nothing on the quake maps.

Probably just our own secret technology taking off or landing somewhere in the Whidbey naval air station or the Bangor Submarine base close by there.

And the suckers that paid overinflated prices AND then enjoyed overindulgent refinances to get at the cash within those overpriced homes, have paid a hefty fee with the housing crash and any slides occurring. I'm trying to feel bad for them...but it doesn't seem to be working. It's not everyone, but there are a lot of smug turds that live over there AND love to tear down good rooted trees to have there views. Surprise pay backs in whatever form are a bitch.

There was a 3.2 about 40 miles west of Seattle and a couple of smaller ones maybe 25 miles south of the slide area, but really nothing of significance for the area recently. Living in the vicinity of the Bangor sub base and the Whidbey Island naval air station could make for some odd booming, shaking and/or weird sky lights at times too.

Oh no...the tax department will tell him that he still own that part of the property that slid down AND you'll be charged for the removal of it from someone else's property too. Hope they enjoyed the view they have, cause it just became a whole lot more expensive.

Actually, after typing this, I thought that maybe the tax goons will probably add another 60 vertical feet to his property line since the end of his property is now 60 feet lower. So now he owns a 300 by 100 foot property instead of 230 by 100 foot property...and he'll probably be hit for violating zoning laws by expanding his property without a permit. Oh, the humanity.
