Telephone prevents DOS attacks by the way of registration, same for account recovery.

For instance, say I get into your email account at hotmail or yahoo (how? Who cares, you left the page open or something). Lets say you have accounts @ google and I want to access those but I do not have your password. I go to an account recovery page and use your email to send all your google accounts to hotmail or yahoo. Then I reset your passwords to something simple so I can start taking your *stuff*.

Not only that, I can after a while gain access to nearly every account you own.

Enter phone verification. I'd have to have your cell or land-line in front of me to gain the same access.

Phones also help prevent false registrations. Fake emails are easy to create whereas fake phone #s aren't if you have to verify the #.

If I had a bot or script banging away at a registration system without this protection, I could register thousands of people (or fake ppl) and use up all the usernames available (well, just the ones that make sense). I would have effectively halted registration, at least for a period of time (generally a week but many sites don't have a way to clear those out quickly (such as a crone job) and manually have to do it). Phones aren't the only way to secure these but quick and easy, especially if your already using such a service for account recovery.

This doesn't prevent any service provider from using your # for other purposes. Always make sure to read the privacy policies (and terms, things can get intermingled).

Like when we sign up for an account on this site you don't automatically get all of the personal info on us.

This is just another data mining thread.

Someone is flagging your youtube acct! It happened to me and when I didn't act fast enough, the acct was gone! I've never gotten it back either!

AND AS MORE PEOPLE CLOSE THEIR ACCOUNTS, THE AVAILABLE NEW VIDEOS BECOMES LESS AND LESS.

Gmail is connected with youtube... I get the same thing with gmail again hit the back button

Something that sucks is that if you are applying for jobs, a prospective employer will search on your name and if nothing comes up, that counts against you.

Why would that count against you? My days of job hunting are pretty much over with anyway, but what makes you think that an employer would not hire you if you don't have a facebook or youtube account?

I recall reading the contract when they had us yt-ers go to the new google system. It actually says they own all our vids and may reproduce, redistribute, delete, archive, etc. and also edit our content. Edit is what got me, they can edit our words and image and in 5 years we are on the news saying some dumb shit. I am aware of it but so far not to worried. It is something to consider.

Forgot to mention all my other YouTube sock accounts have been locked out now with the forced phone number gig... and I can't even be bothered to try and get around it. Even though they have uploads, and I'd like to have access to them, it's just too much of a pain in the ass to bother. I'd rather just not use YouTube.
