I went on the USGS website and it showed the 4.7. Check out the list of earthquakes on this page. Then I went back and it was gone. I need to recheck....due to them upgrading it. Here is the link...

I wonder why all agencies are so screwed up on 'one' quake....never saw that happen before. So was there one, two, or three.

there are different types of websites:

"official" agencies - they record the data
(there are many other agencies around the world)

example - [link to earthquake.usgs.gov]

"compilers"-the gather the data from the different agencies. (for example kayak.com for earthquakes)
so this is why you get multiple readings for earthquakes at these websites. they list where from under the "source" column

example- [link to quakes.globalincidentmap.com]

I hope this helped.

One more thing. I would take an educated guess that the reason that the different "official" agencies have different reasons are:

1. different equipment. -some newer, some more accurate, different technologies...etc

2. some agencies equipment are closer to the source thus they can get a more accurate reading.

3. can anyone else can explain?

Re: 4.7m earthquake off the coast of Northern California
Thank you. Generally they all end up with the same reading eventually. After so many hours I thought they would all be on the same page by now.
