A study titled 'Model simulations on the long-term dispersal of 137Cs released into the Pacific Ocean off Fukushima' published in July 2012 indicated that large pockets of floating cesium-137 the area of many Western states will reach North America's coastal waters five years after the tsunami.

By 2016 according to the study authors, the radiation levels in these pockets, which will sinisterly float eastward between the latitudes of southern California and southern British Columbia, Canada, could reach up to 1,000 times pre-Fukushima levels.
