Am I reading this right? 24,000 die a year from cold weather related deaths?

Each year, an official estimate is made of the “excess winter mortality” – that is, the number of people dying of cold-related illnesses. Last winter was relatively mild, and still 24,000 perished. The indications are that this winter, which has dragged on so long and with such brutality, will claim 30,000 lives, making it one of the biggest killers in the country. And still, no one seems upset.

Yeah, the old and the ill, they got to go somehow.
What do you want them to do, declare war on the cold?

It's very bad, the U.S. had around 700 freeze to death in their homes in 2011.

But in the UK it is a whole other story.

Snip; The yearly tax-free payment to help people pay for their heating in the winter was worth £250 for the over 60s last week, and £400 for the over 80s.

But the payment will revert to £200 and £300 for the two age groups in the winter of 2011-12.

But Chancellor George Osborne signalled the return of inflation-linked savings.

Some elderly people live off the interest from savings but have been hit by low interest rates and a rising rate of inflation recently.

The Budget offered National Savings and Investments (NS&I) - a government-backed provider - the option to raise its revenue. This is likely to signal a return of savings certificates which track the rate of inflation.

Hard hit

Anyone on a fixed income or trying to live off the income from savings is suffering from the effects of inflation - because the things they are buying are rising in price, unlike the funds they have to pay for them.

Investment company Alliance Trust suggested that in February, pensioners up to the age of 75 faced the highest level of inflation of any age group, owing in part to rising utility bills and food prices.

That is crazy, so what you're saying is people have died & will continue to die because they simply can't pay their heating bills?

Because huge numbers rely on the government for their “pension” and as the government goes more and more in debt they cut the pension budgets and at the same time inflation increases are take a bigger bit out of what is left. People are forced to choose between food or heat.

I personally know a disabled person in the UK who is distant family. She is rather young but handicapped, yet in the last 8 months they told her she needs to get a job even though she cannot walk.

They redefined her case because of the 2010 legislation to re-assess benefits, as they try to weed out the fakes the real people who need help get caught in the BS of the scope.

She is a burden to the system in their eyes, better to have her work for near nothing and be in the cold and on busses all day then help, it’s cheaper.

Same with old people, they are considered a burden on the system. The more who pass away the more money the government saves... It controls everything from healthcare to heating bills to food bills for pensioners.

Never rely on a government check in your future. Sadly the handicapped and those already retired with a promises to be taken care of do not have that luxury.

I would love to hear more opinions from those who live with this. I do not talk about it on this forum often, but I do follow it very close and talk to a great many people from the UK.
