Has Mag North Moved 20* East In The Last 24 Hours?

Yes I went and put the compass across the room by the window, and it is completely normal, very reassuring!!

It's called *magnetic* North for a reason. Any kind of magnetic interference will affect a compass. Computing devices (pc, router, etc) are loaded with devices that will cause magnetic interference (at short distances).

I may very well be wrong here, so go easy on me, just learning.

You're all saying the magnetic poles are shifting.

Could it not be reasonable to assume that they are not?

Maybe the magnetic poles are still stationary and the Earths crust is moving?
This would create the illusion that the magnetic poles are moving.

Would also explain all the recent tectonic activity, the unusual coldness here in UK and the extreme summer over in Australia.

Just throwing some ideas out there.

Went flying this morning. Beautiful day here in Colorado. No NOTAMS nationwide for anything having to do with compass headings. Thousands of flights worldwide depending on exact headings to land under instruments. I think some of you folks need to read up on the compass cause your doing something wrong. Doom off...regarding compass readings.

tru dat, however, my phone -- it being the constant -- was used to measure mag N twice (a few weeks ago and today)

there was a difference measured at the same location using the same phone

it would have been a better test to measure with a $5 compass, but that didn't happen

I'm in Seattle with 16 degrees East declination, so I should be seeing 344 when facing North. I am seeing 324 degrees with 3 different compasses right now. 5 star thread.

..got my compass from my camping gear after reading this thread, made sure nothing else is affecting it and placed it on the window sill.

it is a bit hovering still, but not much. anyone else seing this watching his compass?

(btw, even holding a ballpen near it affects it a bit! so make sure no speakers no nothing is near it.)

Fail. No pilots use magnetic compass for navigation, too much declination and electromagnetic field effect to be considered. Pilots use GPS and inertial nav.

I just used a compus and my iPhone compus and ther are telling 2 completely different readings. My iPhone is pointing to the left a little as the handheld compus points a little to the right..

I don't think that can be stressed enough! I've noticed variations between my Droid phone, my wife's IPhone and real compasses. One of those being a quality Silva Ranger compass and the other being a surplus military compass. The real compasses are both spot on, the phone compasses were both off probably due to metallic masses around them. It's just the nature of the way they operate.

Your an idiot...every plane has a magnetic compass mounted in it should the electrical system fail. Why do you say anything when you have no idea of what you are talking about...

The problem with that is the phone will not hold constant.

I have a mark on my porch for True North and I check it with a compass against that occasionally. I live in Texas, but it's pretty close to an old volcanic area in New Mexico and we have a pretty major fault that runs along the Canadian River, so magnetic anomalies are not terribly uncommon here...

Don't kid yourself. It's been proven that the Jet Stream IS being pulled along by the movement of the Magnetic Poles & it IS causing changes to the Weather on this lovely Planet we call Home.

You are quite correct - powerful magnets on hard drives. Move well away from any electronics or speakers and then test.
