Well, I would say spiritually symbolic. Spirits love to make statements, I imagine that would include deities. After all, we all are spirits housed in flesh, are we not?
Aside from that, I am a true snake lover. My pet rat snake has been with me for over 6 years now. Sadly misunderstood and maligned creatures, they are. He has been a source of great comfort to me.

This thread and what was claimed happened on set but not proven just furthers the idea that Snakes are evil creatures slithering around waiting to kill you and encourages people culling them at mass in certain Southern States of the U.S. and others killing them if found on their property or in their house instead of calling for trained removalists.

Snakes are beautiful animals, that yes, most do bite and some are very venomous but they are not evil creatures. Superstition like this needs to end for the sake of our environment. If a major species like Snakes are culled to extinction then we all die too. True.
