Could be a lot of people are going to boycott GMO corn products whenever they can. Price is down because: ' 1. Corn stocks exceeded USDA estimate by nearly 10% 2. Players who went long on corn scrambling out of positions. 3. U.S. farmers planning to plant most corn acreage since 1936. 4. Many ethanol and beef operations were idled due to high prices. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 32041464 Australia 04/01/2013 01:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There should be no "limit down" on FOOD!!!!!! This is insane!!! Thousands of families may be able to feed their kids less expensively some time in the future, and farmers able to afford more feed for their stocks, etc. etc. etc. and we've got a bunch of rich people who've rigged the market so that when their casino bets are tanking, they stop them from getting cheaper! SAY NO TO FOOD BEING ON THE STOCK EXCHANGE!!!!! |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17006327 Largest traders are producers and end-users who use the commodity exchange mechanism to hedge against price fluctuation. Stock Exchange, Commodity Exchange, it's still a "bet" on FOOD! Do you not agree? These exchanges are what cause the price fluctuation in the first place! Without the stock (oh sorry, commodity) exchange, Food prices would be as they SHOULD be. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 17006327 United States 04/01/2013 02:31 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think price fluctuations would be much more extreme without the exchanges. If prices fell too dramatically, many farmers might decide not to plant corn at all, resulting in shortages and radically higher prices down the road. People have been using exchanges since the time of the Sumerians, for very good reasons. Are you saying we should quit using a time tested(millenia) method for market stabilization? |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17006327 If prices fell too dramatically, many farmers might decide not to plant corn at all, resulting in shortages and radically higher prices down the road. People have been using exchanges since the time of the Sumerians, for very good reasons. Are you saying we should quit using a time tested(millenia) method for market stabilization? Yes. We have the internet now. Farmer's can go online and find out how much they would get for a bushel of corn. The way we have it right now. Someone may have bought a whole heap of corn at the higher price right before it nose dived. Do you think that's fair? How about the farmer's all get together and talk about what they can get for it, if it's worth it to plant. Oh yes, and throw in the government subsidy factor. The "Sumerians" didn't have the internet, they didn't have a way of knowing what the weather predictions were going to be for the future. That argument is weak. Farmers as well as the "PEOPLE" would be much better off if a bunch of rich people weren't deciding to buy corn commodities and jack up the price. And as far as stability goes. Well you saw what happened today. A report comes out and everybody scrambles. You call that stability? I call it greed. |
