Nothing gonna happen Quoting: Anonymous Coward 37097176 Hostages make great bargaining chips Do you think they care? They'll be running it over as they scream by in the first wave on their way to Seoul! Nobody really talks about a ground force offensive with NK, but I agree with you. With the amount of infantry they have it would be a human wave going against SK. And while all of this is going on, let's not forget Iran. Or our actions (or possible ones) against Iran. Iran has been far too quiet lately, and quiet with "enemies" often means they're up to something. Good point. If you look at the military stats, North Korea outnumbers South Korea in every branch of the military. If North Korea was pushed back and started to lose the war they could activate their 8.2 million reserves and 5,000 tanks and finish the job on the ground. In 1950 the Chinese 'human wave' attack only consisted of about 80,000 troops (still a lot by any measure), but if you could imagine a human wave attack of over 1 million (let alone 8.2 million) you get to see the dilemma for the South Koreans and U.S. It puts the U.S in a position where it risks Chinese or Russian intervention by sending multiple aircraft carriers and hundreds of thousands of troops and heavy armory into China and Russia's backyard. This also means that the U.S would have to pull its carriers and heavy armor from strategically important areas protecting other allies (i.e, Israel, Persian Gulf, etc...) If the U.S decides to revoke its 'first use' policy of nuclear weapons and deal with the NK threat by nuking its way to victory, that invites a series of variables that involve some pretty ugly miscalculations (not to mention full Japanese rearmament and acquisition of an ICBM capability that would have far-reaching global implications). So, in summary........ If North Korea uses its FULL military might it would probably overwhelm the relatively small SK-US force and win, unless the U.S is happy to send a quarter of its military on to China's and Russia's doorstep and possibly start WW3. |

I have to agree. They're unarguably the most brainwashed and fiercely loyal combat force on the planet. Probably the only upside to a Dictatorship like that (an army that really does believe it's invincible). I've read analyses by military experts who reason that North Korea would be like Japan in WW2 except with nuclear weapons. Combine that with kamikaze and you have one hell of an unpredictable enemy. |

Koreas mostly rough mountainous terrain, with only really two major thoroughfares of attack going N/S, creating easily defensible bottlenecks. I would have imagined they honeycombed every mountain with pillboxes and bunkers and networks of tunnels by now (after 60 years). Probably a good idea to dust off some old flame throwers if we have any left. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 5396611 United States 04/01/2013 04:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hey Lupus, given the food situation in NK, I'd say a lot of the foot troops would do it for a chance to raid the first KFC they see!;) My step father fought in the Korean War and was part of the "Frozen Chosin", or the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir. Out of a few times he talked about it with me, he couldn't believe how cold it was (loosing a couple of toes to frostbite), or the ferociousness of the NK troops. Ask the viewpoint of any Korean War vet and they'll have no problem letting you know the intensity of conflict in that theatre. I think even now the NK believes SK was stolen by the West and seeks to be reunited by force if necessary. And any military force (without tribal/religion affiliations) fighting for the good of country is a hellbent force by any measure. |

Just tell them to "come and collect". Or,...start a regional war and wipe them off the planet. Debt = Gone. But, at what cost? Quoting: salty1 China much much much bigger than the US. Same nukes more people to through at us. We will be in even more debt. If this happens this war will last years and years and anyone under 60 will be on the front lines. Were out numbered..... |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 37244701 Greece 04/01/2013 04:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This is what's it's all about.... It explains North Korea's bold threats of nuclear war and the sudden spring to action by the US and South Korea... "As commander-in-chief of the armed forces, I will trust the military's judgement on abrupt and surprise provocations by North Korea." The warning came as The Washington Post reported that the North may be experimenting with a new type of nuclear bomb. Citing unnamed US officials and weapons experts, the newspaper said the effects of North Korea's nuclear test in February were remarkably well contained, with few radioactive traces escaping into the atmosphere. The newspaper says a successful test of a uranium-based bomb would confirm that Pyongyang has achieved a second pathway to nuclear weapons, using its plentiful supply of natural uranium and new enrichment technology."
