He told us a story once when we were older. I remember he said that soldiers lost their feet due to frost bite and not having any place warm to go and couldn't start a fire and give away their location, etc. He told us a few other stories that night too, but I just can' remember them at the moment, 40 something year's ago and he never said another word about it to us, it all came out ONE night, and that was it, he never shared the stories again and I never heard him even talk to his friends or family about it. It was like he just wanted to forget it all and never think about it. The night he told us, well, he had too many beers. Most people do not know anything about the Korean war, and how many people died is largly unknown, but it was millions- I got bad karma the other day for saying this, like it isn't true, but it is. It was a horrible war. I am glad your father told you a little about it. I remember the G.I.s coming home w/no feet, hands, and badly frost bitten nose and ear scars, a few takled about how badly the US bombed the holy living shit out of NK, until there were no buildings visable from the air. The old N. Koreans who remember are scared to death of the USA. |

With the new high explosive bombs ,they are very lethal. We could have won the Vietnamese war in one week, but they pulled them back after bombing the harbor at Haiphong. I interrogated many V.C. And they feared most the B-52's. you do not see or hear them coming and it sounds like the end of the world. It will make a country look like craters on the moon. |

Possessing some 8,500 field artillery pieces (caliber 122mm or greater) and 5,100 multiple-launch rocket systems, the Korean People’s Army could certainly inflict serious damage along the Southern side of the DMZ in the event of a surprise attack. Since the 1994 nuclear crisis, the DPRK has put a high priority on deploying weapons systems along the DMZ that can damage South Korea without the need of a ground invasion. An estimated 13,000 or so field artillery pieces and multiple-launch rocket systems in North Korea’s possession. KOKSAN 170MM THREAT North Korea’s 170mm Koksan guns, reported to be the only artillery which “can reach central Seoul from behind the North Korean Border,” are arguably Pyongyang’s most powerful artillery asset. Designed to fire between two to four rounds per minute, these massive guns (each 14m long) can strike targets 40km away if using conventional mortar ammunition, or up to 54km when firing “rocket assisted projectiles” and still reach downtown Seoul with full effect. In total, both the Nautilus Institute and Global Security suggest there are as many as 500 of these long-range guns located along the DMZ. Capable of launching “4 rounds a minute” in any opening barrage. Taken all together, these figures suggest that North Korea could bombard South Korea with about 12,000 shells per hour if it were to use all of its Koksan Guns simultaneously. . 240MM MULTIPLE ROCKET LAUNCHERS The majority of Pyongyang’s most lethal artillery capability is invested in their 60km range, 240mm multiple rocket launchers (MRL 240). Possessing around 200 of the MRL 240’s in the border region directly north of Seoul (according to IISS), these units would be well within range of bombarding even downtown areas in the South Korean capital. Capable of launching 12-22 rounds in a single burst, the MRL240 rockets can include high explosive, smoke, incendiary and chemical warhead capabilities. In times of war, this forward facing deployment could reportedly fire up to 4,400 shells in a single burst, reloading four times per hour to bombard the capital city at a rate of between 9,600 to 17,600 rounds per hour (the variation depends on whether or not they use the 22 or 12 barrel capacity launchers). In a worst case scenario, this means the North Koreans could even be capable of quickly turning a 6 sq. km area “into rubble”. Wed to chemical warheads, the scope for damage increases significantly. While the notion that North Korea could launch as many as 20,000 shells per hour looks unlikely in light of the issues described above, 300 artillery pieces in direct range of Seoul is of course a serious concern for allied commanders. A “sea of fire” might not be the result in case of their use, but it is evident that tens of thousands of civilians could die and even more injured if they were used in an indiscriminate way. ALTERNATIVE MEANS While we’ve take a look at North Korea’s most formidable artillery, it is nevertheless important to remember that this isn’t the full story. Indeed, the Korean People’s Army possesses a wide range of other self-propelled artillery pieces, including various road mobile 122mm and smaller MRL systems and the M-1992 120mm gun. In addition, it possesses towed systems like the D-20 152mm and D-30 122m guns, both of which could cause substantial damage when used in groups simultaneously. But because the range of all of these artillery pieces falls short of even suburban Seoul, it means their usage north of the DMZ would only be suited for nearby targets like military bases and small towns and villages. It is also important to remember that North Korea can pose threats in many other ways to nearby Seoul. In particular, the KPA reportedly has chemical munitions for all types of artillery rounds 107mm and greater. Sixty five per cent of DPRK ground troops are now located within 60 miles of the DMZ, compared with 45 per cent in 1984.[1] In addition, the DPRK now possesses an arsenal of roughly 600 Hwasong missiles and 100 Nodong missiles that put all of ROK and Japanese territory (and the United States bases therein) well within striking range of projectiles equipped withWMD warheads. Then as described in a previous post, there is the asymmetrical threat of the DPRK Air Force, a rather large naval presence, and a population that could see up to 8,000,000 soldiers conscripted in the event of conflict. With Seoul just a stone’s throw from the DMZ (35km), some estimates calculate that an artillery exchange alone between the Koreas could lead to as many as hundreds of thousands of deaths in Seoul, with one former U.S. commander saying it could even cost the U.S. 52,000 military personnel and over $100 billion, not to mention the catastrophic economic damages caused to the region. Then MacArthur landed at Inchon and cut the NK army from their supply lines and rolled them up easily. Seeing that the US had virtually won the war the Chinese stepped in. The US had advanced rapidly (too rapidly) and left the mountain ranges unguarded. The chinese infiltrated entire divisions behind US lines and cut them off. This during a terribly cold winter storm. This incident bred many of the horror stories. The retreat was horrific. It was hard, but the americans and brits finally broke out. They regrouped and pounded the chinese all the way back to the current line. China didn't give up the fight so the US secretly sent them word that if they did not accept the current line then China would be nuked. China agreed and thus NK had no choice but to agree since they had no strength left to continue the war. |

You do realize that the North Koreans have an 8,000,000 man active reserve...add that to the 1,200,000 active soldiers and you have 9,200,000 soldiers coming at you before the Chinese arrive! You do realize that you need to be able to feed 9,200,000 soldiers... good luck doing that NK! They would be able to have a sustained fight for about a day before they all gave up from hunger pains. |

Or..... (2) Nuke North Korea and have North Korea wipe out the major financial hubs of Seoul and Tokyo in retaliation, devestating the global economy, killing the Dollar and sparking a war with China at the same time. In either case, a conflict in North Korea would pull away a LOT of US manpower from overseas, and risk abandoning the West's allies in Israel, Saudi Arabia and the Karzai regime in Afghanistan. If North Korea feels it is losing the war it will activate its 8.2 million reserves and prompt the US to pull even more resources away from its overseas bases, even from the mainland itself. Conscription is a possibility. So many variables. It's not a black & white case. |

And many atomic bombs were dropped near Korea too show our determination too win. 400 Canadian soldiers fought off 4000 Chinese in one battle. Thats how intense it was. At hamburger hill the Americans posted a sign saying "Abandon all hope those who enter" Not a single light could be seen from North Korea at night after dropping 800 tons of bombs on them daily. Part of our current 'projected' might consists of stealth technology that was developed over 30 years ago... one example of many. Technological advancements in the last 10 years alone render troop count far less significant than in previous large-scale wars.
