What's the death rate on this new strain?

No way to tell until they come clean with how many cases they really have. Last I heard their saying 16 cases in the hospital and 6 deaths.

Hong Kong reports first suspected case of H7N9

A seven-year-old Hong Kong girl is being tested for the H7N9 flu virus after she returned from Shanghai and showed flu-like symptoms, officials said on Friday in the city's first suspected case.

Do they know how it's spread yet? Shanghai and HK are both densely populated--it will be interesting to see how this plays out. I heard earlier that Shanghai officials ordered a city-wide live poultry cull.

Reports say most of the infections came from handling poultry.. The key word I picked out there was 'most'. hiding

China is very unhygienic, so I'm not suprised people are getting sick so easily.

I was in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou six months ago. Each of those cities are over 20 million in population. People are jammed together like sardines in trains, buses, apartments, etc.

There are dead meat carcasses in the streets, restaurants reuse utensils without washing them (I brought my own plastic utensils when going out), people spit everywhere, pick their noses in public like no big deal, etc. don't wash their hands, sneeze on you, regularly use the streets as a bathroom, and the water is not potable even in the 5 star hotels I stayed at. My guide wore the same clothes for a week. Not sure she took a bath either.

I resorted to drinking only bottled water or boiled water with purification tablets. But that probably wasn't good enough either. Did not eat any fruit I didn't peel myself, didn't drink juice or eat salad in case someone used tap water to prepare it. Used bottled water for tooth brushing.

I seriously feel awful for the people there. It is impossible to live safely.

Not to mention the horrific smog.

In Shanghai, I felt like I was smoking 10 cigarettes at once; I had a horrible time breathing on certain days _inside_ my "non-smoking" hotel room.

I don't understand how people who are so smart refuse to even make an effort at treating their water and do something about food safety issues and basic hygiene issues. One colleague had the horror of having to go to a Chinese emergency room where blood and vomit lay in the floor with nobody doing anything about it.

It's like they just don't care.

So, yeah, no surprise. It was a miracle I got through 2.5 weeks without an illness.

Re: BREAKING UPDATE April 21st, 2014 / 421st case / 145 deaths from H7N9 . MERS CoV 228 Cases, 92 deaths
The reason why swine flu made so many headlines last time was because of the danger of it mutating and spreading from bird to other animals and mixing with common strains to become a super virus easily passed on by humans. It didn't though and governments were called scaremongers because it didn't.

This strain sounds like it is well on its way to becoming what they and the sensibly cautious of us feared but governments will be more reluctant to warn against it now because of what happened with it last time.

I can see this exploding one day when it is far to late to prevent and the world will be asking why... hiding

Shanghai tests show H7N9 bird flu in chickensChicken samples in Shanghai were revealed last night to be infected with the H7N9 virus.

It prompted the agriculture ministry to increase checks for the deadly strain of bird flu as the city temporarily closed live poultry markets and suspended live bird sales elsewhere.

How bad is the H7N9 bird flu? We give you the scary answers

What changes are scientists seeing in the virus and why is this important?

A: Although it is not yet clear, the virus appears to have mutated in a way that would make it easier for it to adapt and grow at normal body temperature in mammals. Scientists are working to figure out which species could now be playing host to the virus, and one possibility is pigs.

Is there a vaccine?

A: No vaccine exists, but the World Health Organisation and its partners are already working to isolate and identify possible candidate viruses that could be used to make a future vaccine if necessary. However, it would likely take months to produce the first doses.

Recombinomics site says media reports describe a Shangai cluster as well of multiple additional reports of lab confirmed cases.
The arge number of cases and the presence of key genetic markers (subclades never seen in H5N1 before) associated with human adaptation raises serious pandemic concerns.damned

As of Saturday, China has confirmed 18 H7N9 cases -- eight in Shanghai, six in Jiangsu, three in Zhejiang and one in Anhui, in the first known human infections of the lesser-known strain. Of all, four in Shanghai and two in Zhejiang have died.
