Study Examines Transmissibility of H7N9 Avian Influenza Virus

Chinese and U.S. scientists have used virus isolated from a person who died from H7N9 avian influenza infection to determine whether the virus could infect and be transmitted between ferrets. Ferrets are often used as a mammalian model in influenza research, and efficient transmission of influenza virus between ferrets can provide clues as to how well the same process might occur in people. The research was supported, in part, by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health.

All the infected ferrets and pigs showed mild signs of illness, such as sneezing, nasal discharge, and lethargy, but none of the infected animals became seriously ill.

CDC Preparing for H7N9 Pandemic

[link to threatjournal.com]

From link:

Readers are reminded that while reported infection numbers are still relatively low, H7N9 clearly has world health authorities seriously spooked. So much so, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the CDC this week published a 1 BILLION dollar cost plus Federal Solicitation for the purposes of emergency experimentation with H7N9 Flu vaccines and emergency experimental antiviral treatments.

The Solicitation specifically references "preparation for a possible large scale national H7N9 influenza vaccination program."

Earlier this month, the CDC issued a presolicitation announcement of their intended $600 million dollar acquisition of 512 million syringes, alcohol prep pads and other related products necessary to meet the vaccine administration needs of the American public during a pandemic influenza event.

However ugly things look right now,it might be better not to turn away, but face it.

Most of the sad and bad things happening, are not an accident.

And that includes diseases.

People that keep posting real information and others spreading it,are the only way to wake enough people up and fight what we're facing.

Everybody on this thread is doing a great job ,trying to get to the bottom of things ,and inform others.

WHO to help investigate coronavirus
The World Health Organisation (WHO) will help Saudi Arabia dig deeper into deadly outbreaks of a new SARS-like virus to draw up advice ahead of the annual haj pilgrimage, which attracts millions of Muslims.

The virus, which can cause coughing, fever and pneumonia, emerged in Saudi Arabia last year and has been found in 33 people there, killing 17. They are among 44 cases and 22 deaths worldwide, according to the WHO, which has called it the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV).

Beijing Reports 2nd H7N9 Case

[link to afludiary.blogspot.ca]

Today the Beijing Department of Health announced the detection of their 2nd lab-confirmed H7N9 case Ė this time in a 6 year-old-boy who fell ill and was seen at a local hospital on May 21st, and was treated for three days for fever, sore throat, headache and enlarged tonsils.

It appears that H7N9 was not suspected, and he recovered sufficiently enough to return to a daycare facility on May 24th.

Samples taken from the child were analyzed on May 28th, and found to be positive for the H7N9 virus. The child was subsequently returned to the hospital for observation, and surveillance of his contacts is underway.

Drug-resistant strains of H7N9 bird flu discovered
In a study published in The Lancet on May 28, researchers detailed three patients with the new avian flu strain that's hit China, known as H7N9, whose sickness could not be treated by Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and similar drugs.

"The apparent ease with which antiviral resistance emerges in A/H7N9 viruses is concerning; it needs to be closely monitored and considered in future pandemic response plans," the authors wrote.
