Deadlier than SARS: MERS mortaility rate rises to 65% in Saudi Arabia

Posted on June 20, 2013by The Extinction Protocol

June 20, 2013 – SAUDI ARABIA - A new virus responsible for an outbreak of respiratory illness in the Middle East may be more deadly than SARS, according to a team of infectious-disease specialists who recently investigated cases in Saudi Arabia. Of 23 confirmed cases in April, 15 people died — an “extremely high” fatality rate of 65 percent, according to Johns Hopkins senior epidemiologist Trish Perl, a member of the team that analyzed the spread of the virus through four Saudi hospitals. Saudi officials said that as of Wednesday, 49 people have contracted the disease and 32 have died. The experts, who published their findings online Wednesday in The New England Journal of Medicine, reported that infection occurred by way of person-to-person contact and poses an especially serious risk because it is easily transmitted in hospital settings. Worldwide, the overall death rate from the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus — or MERS-CoV — is at 59 percent, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That rate is expected to bounce around as new clusters of infection develop. Most MERS infections have been from Saudi Arabia. No cases have been reported in the United States, but small clusters have appeared in the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Tunisia. Since the virus first emerged in April 2012 with two fatal cases in Jordan, 64 people have been infected and 38 have died around the world. The virus comes from the same family as the severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, coronavirus, which killed nearly 800 people worldwide in 2003. Like SARS, MERS starts with a fever and mild cough that eventually progresses to pneumonia. –Seattle Times [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

New virus found in brain infection patients in Vietnam

Posted on June 24, 2013by The Extinction Protocol

June 24, 2013 – VIETNAM – Researchers have discovered a new virus in patients in Vietnam suffering from severe brain infections, a team of scientists reported today in mBio, the journal of the American Society for Microbiology. The virus was detected in 28 of 644 patients who had severe brain infections and none of 122 patients who had non-infectious brain disorders, according to researchers at the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit, Wellcome Trust South East Asia Major Overseas Program and the Academic Medical Center, University of Amsterdam. It’s tentatively called CyCV-VN and is part of a group of viruses known as Circoviridae known to circulate in animals such as birds and pigs, they said. “We don’t yet know whether this virus is responsible for causing the serious brain infections we see in these patients, but finding an infectious agent like this in a normally sterile environment like the fluid around the brain is extremely important,” Rogier van Doorn, head of emerging infections at the Wellcome Trust Vietnam Research Program and Oxford University Clinical Research Unit Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Vietnam, said in a statement. Brain infections can be fatal and may leave people who survive them with severe disabilities, the researchers said. Bacteria, parasites, fungi and viruses can cause the infections, though doctors can’t pinpoint the cause of more than half of them. The study was funded by the Wellcome Trust, the European Union and the Li Ka-Shing Foundation-University of Oxford Global Health Program. –Bloomberg [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

H7N9 bird flu 'kills about 1/3 hospitalised patients'

H7N9 bird flu 'kills about 1/3 hospitalised patients'
(AFP) – 3 hours ago
PARIS — The H7N9 bird flu that hit China this year killed over a third of hospitalised patients, said researchers Monday who labelled the virus "less serious" but probably more widespread than previously thought.

They warned watchdogs not to take comfort from a lull in new infections, as the virus may reappear in the autumn.

Saudis, WHO report 8 asymptomatic MERS cases

[link to crofsblogs.typepad.com]

Saudi Arabia reported nine new MERS-CoV (Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus) cases in the past 3 days, including six cases that were asymptomatic. In addition, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Jun 22 that two Saudi MERS cases that had been announced earlier were also asymptomatic. The Saudi and WHO reports offered the clearest evidence yet of such cases, which suggest the possibility that people can unknowingly carry and spread the virus.
