DOH upgrades H7N9 status to class 5 disease

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Department of Health (DOH) announced yesterday that H7N9 influenza has been listed as a Category V Notifiable Infectious Disease given the number of cases of the virus reported in mainland China.

“The epidemic prevention in Taiwan has been raised to Level 3 according to the classification of the World Health Organization,” said Chang, “and so far there have been no confirmed H7N9 cases reported in Taiwan.”

China said it was mobilizing resources nationwide to combat a new strain of deadly bird flu that has killed four people, as Japan and Hong Kong stepped up vigilance against the virus and Vietnam banned imports of Chinese poultry.

In Japan, airports have put up posters at entry points warning all passengers from China to seek medical attention if they suspect they have bird flu.

H7N9: Five reasons the new bird flu is cause for concern

1. It’s never been seen in humans before

2. Virus has learned to adapt to mammals

3. The cases do not appear linked

4. The virus appears to cause no symptoms in birds and possibly pigs

5. Credibility of Chinese officials

Pretty good kill rate.
The ones dying in Shanghai is what's troubling. Shanghai, I presume, has the most healthcare resources available in all of China. This is kinda fucked.

H7N9 bird flu strain 'has worrying traits'

AFP - A mutated bird flu virus that has killed six people in China displays worrying traits that warrant high vigilance, experts say, though the true extent of the threat is unclear.

Most concerning is the virus' wide geographical spread, and the fact that it seems to be spreading unseen among its host animals, possibly chickens or ducks.

"Any influenza that jumps from an animal species to a human has pandemic potential," Alan Hampson, chairman of the Australian Influenza Specialist Group, said in a statement issued by the Science Media Centre.

Why do you think only 16 cases of a strain of flu would be WORLD WIDE NEWS?
Look at the death rate.

HANGHAI, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in Shanghai on Thursday closed a live poultry trading zone in an agricultural products market and began slaughtering all birds there after detecting H7N9 bird flu virus from samples of pigeon from the market.

Among the two confirmed H7N9 patients in the city, an adult, who is receiving medical treatment in Ruijin Hospital, is recovering. A four-year-old is being treated in quarantine in a pediatric hospital, said Wu Fan, director of the Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control & Prevention at a press conference.
