Two separate reports this morning suggest that the number of persons infected with the H7N9 virus in China has increased to at least 24, with two new cases reported in Jiangsu Province, and 1 (fatal) case being reported by the media in Shanghai.

Chinese Told to Change Eating Habits as H7N9 Fatalities Rise

China asked its citizens to avoid contact with live poultry as it tries to stem a H7N9 bird flu outbreak whose death toll rose to seven today, with a further 17 people infected in three eastern provinces and Shanghai.

New H7N9 flu cases still sporadic, but numbers still mounting: WHO

Gregory Hartl says Chinese authorities are starting to test for the virus through the country's surveillance network for influenza-like illnesses.

That means people sick with flu-like illnesses who seek care at sites in the network across China could be tested for H7N9.

To date China have confirmed 24 infections, with seven deaths.

It's not clear whether the clustering of cases in the four provinces means that those are the only places where infections are occurring, or whether broadening testing will turn up cases in more far-flung parts of the vast country.

*IF* it's weaponized, the most likely scenario is it was China's own doing, and its release was either accidental or intentional.

But, I've been following pandemic possibilities for years, and people have to understand that Mother Nature is the ultimate bio-terrorist.

The number of cases,and the 30-40% CFR, in such a short time is concerning. Even MORE concerning to me, is China is being forthcoming with at least some information. This tells me they have a bigger problem.

The other thing I find concerning, is the rhetorical switch from "no human-to-human transmission", to "no SUSTAINED or ONGOING human-to-human transmission." Sustained/Ongoing transmission is part of the definition of pandemic, of course we aren't there yet. But, by the careful addition of those words, they are admitting limited H2H transmission. Word games, but significant.

Another thing that needs attention is "no EVIDENCE of H2H transmission." With H5N1, China and Indonesia officials Tamiflu first, THEN provide the test. As the Tami still appears effective on H5N1, if the patient was infected, the Tami clears it up...viola! negative test, and that negative test is hollered from the rooftops. If they tested first, then Tami'd, I suspect the story would be a lot different. As will things be different when the Tami blankets fail.

H5N1 is/was a slow burn over the last several years. In comparison, H7N9 seems to be "exploding" on to the scene.

This one bears watching. (Especially now that a Chinese general is blogging that the U.S. infected those people with a weapon. ugh.)

A senior military official has caused an outrage among netizens for calling the current avian flu outbreak in mainland China an American conspiracy and belittling a string of deaths from the virus.

“The national leadership should not pay too much attention to it,” Dai Xu, senior colonel with the People’s Liberation Army’s air force and lecturer at the National Defence University, wrote on his Sina Weibo micro-blog on Saturday. “Or else, it’ll be like in 2003 with Sars!”

“At that time, America was fighting in Iraq and feared that China would take advantage of the opportunity to take other actions,” he wrote. “This is why they used bio-psychological weapons against China. All of China fell into turmoil and that was exactly what the US wanted. Now, the US is using the same old trick. China should have learned its lesson and should calmly deal with the problem.”

Probably not. There's no way to know how many people have been exposed to the virus and only developed "mild" symptoms.

That was the case during the initial outbreak of the H1N1 virus in mexico. Initially this looked to be a repeat of the Spanish flu outbreak, but the reality was the virus was spreading like wildfire even before the first deaths.

Of course you fell for it.

That's why this story is manufactured. To cause fear. 24 cases and only 7 deaths out of a billion people in China? That's like 0.1 percent.
