Shanghai man dies from H7N9 infection

June 27, 2013 – CHINA - Shanghai health officials today reported another death from the H7N9 flu virus, in a man whose infection was first announced in early April and whose wife was among the first in the city to die from the disease. The 56-year-old man whose surname was Gu died early this morning, raising the number of outbreak fatalities in China to 40, according to a report from Xinhua, China’s state news agency. His case had been confirmed on Apr 11. The man’s 52-year-old wife died from an H7N9 infection on Apr 3, according to previous reports. Family-cluster infections aren’t surprising in outbreak settings and can result from common exposures or human-to-human contact. So far the man and his wife are the only known couple to be infected in the outbreak. In a May 15 report, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported that the couple’s 26-year-old daughter, Kelly Gu, who is a doctoral student in France, said her mother was probably infected on her daily trip to the market near the couple’s home in Shanghai. She questioned the treatment her mother received early in the outbreak and said the woman had been sick for 5 days before China’s government announced the H7N9 outbreak, according to AFP. Gu said her father had been sedated and on a ventilator. Gu also made headlines on Apr 22 when she spoke up at a press conference in Shanghai with health officials and a visiting team from the World Health Organization (WHO). She asked about possible treatments for her father, but health officials stopped her before she finished, according to the AFP report. Researchers are still assessing the severity as the H7N9 outbreak, and although no new cases have been reported since the end of May, some patients sickened earlier in the outbreak are still hospitalized. The latest assessment by a team from China in a Jun 24 issue of The Lancet said H7N9 infections are less serious than earlier assessments, with more mild infections than previously thought. So far the virus has sickened 131 people, all but one from China. I have been comparing these two diseases for some time now , this could become very nasty by this winter

A man from Qatar has died in a British hospital from the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (Mers-CoV).


The 49-year-old man was admitted to St Thomas' Hospital in London and was treated in intensive care. He died after his condition deteriorated.

This is the 43rd patient to die from Mers-CoV globally. Countries where the disease has also been found include Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, France, Germany, Italy and Tunisia.

Dr Jon Bible, a virus expert at Guy's and St Thomas', told the Daily Telegraph that they are unsure of what killed the latest victim: "In the end his lungs were worn down, so secondary infection is the real problem. The virus effectively turns your lungs to jelly," he said.

July 4, 2013 – LONDON - A man infected with a SARS-like respiratory illness has died in London, officials said. The Qatari man, who was being treated in an intensive care unit at St Thomas’s hospital in central London, had contracted the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus – or MERS-CoV. Hospital officials said that the man, who was 49 when he was admitted, died after his condition deteriorated. The patient, who was suffering from acute respiratory syndrome and renal failure, was admitted to an intensive care unit in Doha, Qatar, on 7 September last year. The man, who has not been named by officials, was transferred to the UK by air ambulance on 11 September. Before he became ill he had travelled to Saudi Arabia, officials said. Despite doctors’ efforts to keep him alive, including connecting him to an artificial lung, he died on Friday last week. A hospital spokeswoman said: “Guy’s and St Thomas’s can confirm that the patient with severe respiratory illness due to novel coronavirus … sadly died on Friday 28 June, after his condition deteriorated despite every effort and full supportive treatment.” In May, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that MERS-CoV – is a “threat to the entire world” and experts have raised concerns that the disease is “emerging faster than our understanding.” Latest figures from the WHO, published before the latest UK death, show that since September last year there have been 77 laboratory confirmed cases across nine countries, which have resulted in 40 deaths. British health officials have been advised to be vigilant for severe unexplained respiratory illness in anyone who has recently travelled in the Middle East, as well as any unexplained clusters of such illness. Two more people have died of the SARS-like coronavirus MERS, Saudi Arabia's Health Ministry said, bringing to 38 the number of deaths from the disease inside the country shortly before Islam's Ramadan fast when many pilgrims visit. 
A two-year-old child died in Jeddah and a 53-year-old man died in Eastern Province, where the outbreak has been concentrated, the ministry said late on Saturday in a statement on its website. Four people have died outside the kingdom.   
The ministry said another three people had been confirmed as being infected with Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), bringing the total number of confirmed cases inside the kingdom to 65 since it was identified a year ago.

Saudi Arabia: Two-Year-Old is Youngest Mers-CoV Fatality

A two-year-old child in Saudi Arabia has become the youngest person to die from the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (Mers-CoV).


The child, from Jeddah, had been suffering from chronic pulmonary diseases and was diagnosed with the virus in June. The child's gender was not specified.

A 53-year-old from the Eastern Region also died from the disease, the Ministry of Health said, bringing the death toll from Mers-CoV to 44.

MERS-CoV case in Asir hospital confirmed

ABHA — A new case of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) was registered in Asir region, the Health Ministry announced on Tuesday.

It said on its website that a 66-year-old Saudi man was found to have the virus but his condition was stable.

Director of Asir Health Affairs Dr. Ibrahim Al-Hafzi told Saudi Gazette his department has taken all the necessary precautionary and preventive measures to ensure the safety of the patient’s family members who were accompanying him.

The virus, which has killed one-third of the patients hospitalized with it, attaches itself to cells in the windpipe and lungs, infecting even cells lodged deep in the respiratory system, said researchers who analyzed the biological features of the virus.

United Arab Emirates reports its first MERS case

July 13, 2013 – UAE - An 82-year-old man from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been hospitalized in Abu Dhabi with a Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection, the first patient to be diagnosed and treated within the UAE, according to reports from local media. The UAE’s state news agency Wam said the man was being treated for multiple myeloma when he was diagnosed, The National, an English-language newspaper based in Abu Dhabi. reported today. The latest illness raises the global total to 82 cases, of which 45 have been fatal. Though most MERS-CoV cases have been reported from Saudi Arabia, one patient was an Emirati man who died in Germany in late March after he was diagnosed and treated there. That patient was a 73-year-old man who had an underlying illness. A 65-year-old Frenchman who had traveled to the UAE died in May after his return to France. In other developments, Saudi Arabia’s health ministry today updated its health advice for people making Umrah and Hajj pilgrimages, according to report in Arabic flagged by FluTrackers, an international infectious disease message board. The health ministry urged older people and those with underlying medical conditions such as heart or kidney disease to postpone their visits this year as a precaution in response to the emergence of MERS-CoV. The ministry also urged pregnant women and children to postpone making the pilgrimages. Earlier this year the country asked domestic and foreign Muslim pilgrims to postpone their Hajj and Umrah visits this year due to construction at Mecca’s Grand Mosque. This is the most under-reported epidemic... It will get worse...believe it!

They want you all vaccinated, they will say that there are people carriers that show no symptoms therefore you all need a vaccination. They will introduce a bill to make it compulsory. I still believe that they are going to expose the population (or already have)to low level chemical agent like mustard gas to mimic this or any flu like sars disease, how would you know the difference? Six new MERS coronavirus cases reported in UAE, Saudi Arabia

July 19, 2013 – HEALTH – Health authorities in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have reported six new cases of the SARS-like coronavirus, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday. The latest infections of four women and two men aged between 26 and 42 bring the global total to 88 cases, including 45 deaths, the United Nations agency said in a statement. Five of the six new cases were health workers and the other was a man who came in close contact with someone who had been infected with the disease, which is known as Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, or MERS, WHO said. Millions are expected to travel to Mecca in Saudi Arabia in October for the haj pilgrimage. Saudi authorities have cut the number of visas this year, citing safety concerns over expansion work at the main mosque site. The WHO is drawing up advice on travel in relation to coronavirus, to be issued in coming days. It urged health care providers to be vigilant for severe acute respiratory infections and test any recent travelers from the Middle East suffering from such infections for MERS. The global health body has set up an emergency committee of independent experts on MERS, who said on Wednesday it was not a “public health emergency of international concern” for the time being. The committee can make recommendations on travel and trade restrictions, increased disease surveillance and exchange of data. Two of the new coronavirus cases in Abu Dhabi and both cases in Saudi Arabia displayed mild symptoms. The other two in Abu Dhabi had no symptoms of the disease. Yet The National, a newspaper in the United Arab Emirates, published a report on July 19 about four local doctors who'd contracted MERS. WHO reported the same cases on July 18.
Meanwhile, the Saudi Ministry of Health reports only when it has new cases, when it also slips in any "passed away" cases. Other Gulf states' media are also silent in the face of the new threat.
