While the close-up photos are dramatic, the distant photos that include the community and surroundings are most compelling. In those we see a beautiful, neatly maintained neighborhood of homes in startlingly close proximity to peril. All around are wetlands and forests of cypress, the uniquely beautiful signature of Louisiana. Who could blame people for settling here and staying for generations on generations? But what now?

and I am sure this will help things outdamned

Re: Our sixth flyover of the Bayou Corne sinkhole since last August revealed a site much worse than we could have imagined last summer
According to some comments on very recent threads on the sinkhole... some nearby residents aren't even aware and/or concerned about what is going on.

This is mind blowing when this clearly has the potential to be a major catatrosphic event.

God help us all.. especially those in close proximinity to this geological anamoly.

Thanks G4G .. we can't have too much info on this!

It's a sinkhole.

Funny how people attach labels to it like "good" or "bad", or "better" or "worse" to it.

Of course I don't live next to it, and for most on GLP it is only a form of entertainment, so I guess that it is "good" then.

There is no doubt that natural gas extraction does sometimes have negative consequences for the local environment in which it takes place, as does all fossil fuel extraction. And because fracking allows us to put a previously inaccessible reservoir of carbon from beneath our feet into the atmosphere, it also contributes to global climate change.

But as we assess the pros and cons, decisions should be based on existing empirical evidence and fracking should be evaluated relative to other available energy sources.

What exactly is fracking, or more formally hydraulic fracturing?

Local here.

It's not going to blow up from weather. We have had dozens of storms since last summer including a HURRICANE! It's not going to just go kapow because of heavy rain like we are having today.

The tremors are most likely from the continuing sloughing off. Something underneath caves in and it trembles.

Yes it is a toxic nightmare.

Yes it is going to continue to grow.

NO they are not talking about it on the local news much.

YES I feel safe living 50-60 miles from it.

I knew when to leave for Katrina and I will know when to leave for this if need be.

Thank you for you or concern near and far.

As one poster said, I am glad it provides entertainment for y'all.

I do hope y'all realize that if it were to blow, I don't think 500 miles would be far enough.

What what's that?? Did anyone what appears in the video from about 1:55 to 2:05?? Are those cooling towers or something else? I live near BP corporate site and they those same types of "cooling towers". Could that be the problem?

That sinkhole does look awfully murky and oily...

Can anyone shed some light on this?
