North Korea's war plan in case of an US attack is total war, not the 'low-intensity limited warfare' or 'regional conflict' talked about among the Western analysts. North Korea will mount a total war if attacked by the US. There are three aspects to this war plan.

First, total war is North Korea's avowed strategy in case of US preemptive attacks. The US war on Iraq shows that the US can and will mount preemptive strikes in clear violation of international laws, and the United Nations is powerless to stop the US. Any nation that is weak militarily may be attacked by the US at will. It is reasonable for North Korea to deter US attacks with threats of total war.

Second, North Korea expects no help from China, Russia, or other nations in case of war with the US. It knows that it will be fighting the superpower alone. The US war planners know this and have drawn up their own nuclear war plan. In a nuclear exchange, there is no front or rear areas, no defensive positions or attack formations as in conventional warfare. Nuclear weapons are offensive weapons and there is no defense against nuclear attacks except retaliatory nuclear attacks. For this reason, North Korea's war plan is offensive in nature: North Korea's war plan goes beyond repulsing US attackers and calls for destruction of the United States

Attacking the US with a Hydrogen bomb would prompt the US to initiate mutual destruction, and it wouldn't just be NK, they would end the world, literally. Assuming no government is headed by insane people (A point I know not everyone here will agree with, but I feel fairly confident in stating) it would never happen.

I don't think China wants to "back" North Korea although they might openly say differently..they would use an excuse to take over and "occupy" North Korea if it would be of any benefit to them. North Korea, as it is now, is just as much, if not more, a nuisance to them as to us.

The NKs have been preparing the last 60 years for this. We will probably win in the end, but at the loss of a million South Korean casualties or worse.

I'm on board for the theory that Russia or China is pulling the strings here, trying to coup de grace US hegemony. Could also be the Obamites trying to fuck us too. North Korea is baiting the trap. They are like a bull fighter who pricks the bull until it bleeds and is blinded by rage, then they snap the red cape in its face. The bull charges again and again until, exhausted, it can charge no more. Then the matador, though smaller and weaker, drives the sword into the soft spot between the shoulder blades of the bull. For the bull failed to understand that the snapping cape was but a provocation to goad it into attacking and exhausting itself for the kill.

North Korea does not have the capability to launch a large scale attack on the U.S. Mainland, nor do they wish to do so.

What the North Koreans do wish to do is to lure the United States Navy into getting within range of their medium range tactical nukes...which is exactly where Obama is placing the U.S. Navy at this moment.

There is nothing holy about any of this.

Do you understand how mutual destuction works? Nuclear silos do not get "Cut." during budget cuts. Nor do the Nuclear submarines carrying ICBMs. It will be dozens of missles in the air, and headed towards cities all over the globe. There's no stopping it. Even the US coulden't, and they're far closer then anyone else.

I personally think that notion was out the door the day Kim Jong-un took control. This is different.. the kid backed himself up against the door here. If he doesn't follow through with something, I believe he risks the possibility of an internal coup d'état from the same administration that worked with his father.

Not hoping for doom here but this has turned a much different path than we're used to seeing out of DPRK. As it pertains to China, I think it's 70/30 they allow NK to fall (assuming DPRK 'ignites' the war) so long as they are equally involved in the rebuilding and unification of Korea after.. of which they would by default because of their strong economic ties with the ROK, USA, and DPRK.

Bottom line, dude is going rouge and I don't think China's influence over DPRK is as significant as people think.

China and Russia both have nukes!

Im not sure if you guys are aware of this but, if they launch a nuclear warhead on a rocket and we shoot it down. It will still initiate the fission for the warhead. Which means that shooting a nuke in its ballistic trajectory would make it an EMP. Thus leads me to the determination that it would be in Americas best interest to let the nuke touch ground and expload. Sure there would be more casualties in one single area, rather than crippling the entire country's electrical grid. Not to mention NK's biggest nuke is only a 10kt warhead, that is very small and it would have to be small because they do not have the technology of fitting a large warhead onto a long range icbm.

The trick to nuclear war is that all the buttons will be pushed no matter what. You don't seem to get that no nuclear attack and stop a nation from retaliating in turn. Nuclear silos are hidden in hard to find areas, often mobile, and now are undersea in subs. Also the nukes will be detected long before they hit, which means any nation will have time to order their strike before the first wave hits.

So yeah, MAD, Mutually assured Destruction. Everyone loses.
