This plant is well known by locals to have leaks, since the 80's. years ago, residents filed a class action lawsuit, and won, for exposure to toxins, which resulted in high cases of thyroid cancer. This place is a mess, and we all know it. |

State and federal officials have long known that hydrogen gas could build up inside the tanks at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, leading to an explosion that would release radioactive material. The Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board recommended additional monitoring and ventilation of the tanks last fall, and federal officials were working to develop a plan to implement the recommendation. |

The reason its being talked about is pressure is being put on the feds to clean it up. It's not any closer to exloding than it was decades ago. Only problem is if the 9.0+ every 300 year earth quake hits would most likely damage the tanks do to ground displacement might be enough to shake things up, and even then, it would probably only affect the area of the plant. Waterbug User ID: 34388912 United States 04/05/2013 07:03 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Unexpected gas releases from Hanford tank Quoting: Waterbug [link to www.nwcn.com] [snip] Confidential sources say it began on March 16 and lasted for several days, much longer than usual, and they worry a single spark could have set off an explosive release of radioactivity. This comes two days after a report by a government panel expressing concerns about the release of flammable gasses at Hanford and the government's inability to respond to them. Workers who toil above the buried Hanford tank farms constantly monitor the tanks for gas build-ups and will conduct controlled releases to reduce pressure. We're told this was a spontaenous release, not controlled. |

Pretty crappy when other countries talk of it...but local news mentions nothing. Not enough casualties, I suppose. Sigh. Out of sight, out of mind. If you could see a radiation cloud, they'd have a harder time ignoring it. Radiation poisoning by contamination is insidious and invisible.. Ask the downwinders.. How much is your cancer worth.. if you live to collect, that is..? [link to www.downwinders.com] [snip] Judge Wm. Fremming Nielsen presided over the trial that began on April 25, 2005, and went to the jury on May 13. It was a bellwether trial, comprised of 6 plaintiffs with thyroid disease and lasted 3 weeks. After deliberating more than three days, a 12-member jury returned verdicts for two of the six bellwether plaintiffs in the first Hanford downwinder trial. Gloria Wise was awarded $317,251 and Steve Stanton $227,508 for their thyroid cancers. The jury failed to reach a verdict for the third thyroid cancer plaintiff, Shannon Rhodes. Judge Nielsen declared a mistrial in her case and a retrial was held during November 2005. The first jury also returned defense verdicts for the three plaintiffs with hypothyroidism. In June 2005, the plaintiffs appealed these three verdicts to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. In August 2005, the defendants appealed the verdict for Mr. Stanton and Ms.Wise. A different jury sat through a two-week retrial for Ms. Rhodes in November 2005. The 12-member jury deliberated a little more than a day before deciding 11-1 in favor of DuPont and General Electric. In early 2006, Ms. Rhodes' case joined the others on appeal. |
waterlily User ID: 23051653 United States 04/05/2013 08:39 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think perhaps the German papers picked up on responses to a recent DOE report which criticized the Hanford situation. I live not too far from Hanford, and there has been an ongoing problem with storage and cleanup. Having a mess at Hanford benefits both the government and whatever company is currently engaged in the perpetual "cleanup", because it allows extending contracts, expanding funding, etc. Besides, it is a diversion from the financial situation which threatens your bank accounts. Is is really dangerous? I don't know, it has been that way for a long time and there has been no explosion. Who knows what will happen in the future. What are they going to do with those tanks? Any solution would take years to design, get a pass on the design, re-design, and finally maybe construct. My belief is that leaks and breaches in the containment would be more danger than an explosion. We have leaks now and they have decided that the glassification of the waste is a faulty design -- after all this time and all sorts of reviews that said glassification was the absolute best solution. There does not seem to be any quick fix to Hanford. (Or any slow fix for that matter.) *********** WaterLily *********** " Do I dare Disturb the universe?" -- T. S. Elliot, Love Song of J. Be it the sun, jupiter, or hell, just send it where voyager1 is at, 40+ years and just now getting to outer solar system. Now that's a clean up plan. |
