Basement waterproofing!I carried chunks of cement in a wheel barrel that were muddy, non stop 8-14 hours a day, then dump it in a dump truck, hard ass work I thought I never would get used to. I never seen so many people quit in all my life! the guy who trained me in, every other person they hired. you didn't eat a sandwich for lunch, you ate a whole brown shopping bag full of food for lunch. Real labor!

Re: What Is The Hardest Job You Have Ever Held?
let me add another hard job.

When I first left the corporate world and started my own company, I had no employees, and worked from home for a couple of years. The pressure of trying to provide for your family, while never knowing when income was coming in. Factor that in with the fact that you dont have a boss telling you when to work or what to do.I had to be able to force myself to work sometimes 12 hours a day and weekenws Working from home doesnt mean you never go to work, what it really means is you NEVER LEAVE WORK. That was probably the most intense stressful two years of my working life.

Re: What Is The Hardest Job You Have Ever Held?
I've had two jobs that were equally hard physically. One was brick laborer and the other was roustabout.

I wouldn't go back to roustabout. The work environment and people sucked ass. I could do brick laborer again.

Bothcan be physically exausting. Both have a high attrition rate for new hires, especially when the weather is cold or hot. I've seen guys quit in two hours on their first day. I've seen guys literally fall out. On both jobs when I first started it was only through pride that I made it. Of course it gets much easier once your muscles get broke into that particular work and you figure out the easy/smart way to do things.

Roofer. I'm still blue collar, but you couldn't pay me enough to go back to that god awful trade. Try doing it in 118f heat, I assure you it's way above that on the roof. Came home every day with burns on my arms from the asphalt.

I can confirm this. Ex-roofer.

Edit: There are no physical exercises to prepare you for carrying 8 pallet loads of 30 year shingles + tar paper up a 12' ladder. One on each shoulder. When it's 115 F plus. No thanks.

Bike messenger for a few years- Mentally and physically exhausting, with an extra zing of sudden death or dismemberment. It is a young man's game, couldn't do it now if I wanted to (If I was 18 again, however...)

Horse groom at a boarding stable- Hard work, old school. This was some real up before the dawn 365 kind of shit: food goes in three times a day, stalls cleaned out three times a day, and each horse to be groomed carefully at least once a day. Did I mention the 80 horses? Yeah.

Sound Engineer at House of Blues- The happiest fascist regime on Earth: 18 hour days, 2.7 shows a day for 3 consecutive years. I worked like a dog. They paid me nothing. Best. Job. Ever.

Damn, no wonder people hate working! LMAO! Let's be honest, we all gotta work to eat, right? But it would be nice if we all could just win the PCH sweepstakes, too. lol! But that is not reality.

No wonder they call some of this shit slave labor. Cuz that's what it really is.

Re: What Is The Hardest Job You Have Ever Held?
I find it funny that people are listing manual labor jobs as the hardest jobs they ever had. Having worked both manual labor jobs and corporate jobs, I can assure you corporate jobs are MUCH harder. People working manual labor and sweating a bit have it easy. Hell, they are being paid to work out. Big fucking deal. Try multitasking multiple projects at once that involve millions in dollars, and at the same time being responsible for managing 100s of lower tier workers under you, and knowing if they fuck up, its your ass. Thats TRUE hard work.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23829721

Very few people want to be that responsible.
 Quoting: hawk8414

Very true...Very few people want to be that responsible. That statement alone should show people why corporate executives are paid so well. Its because very few people have the skills or the responsibility to do those jobs.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23829721

Maybe by nature to some, those type of jobs are found easy, compared to other jobs.

I find they are.

High tension, deadlines, and multitasking, etc, are fun for me. What is not is bone grinding work out in the hot sun at 120 degrees, and thus are the hardest jobs ever had.

In fact, the current environment is best.

Asymmetrical.

Short ordered.

High threat of death.

Small windows of opportunity.

Perfect was to end a career.

I hear this a lot, and as a single dad with joint custody I know kids can be trying. But, compared to some jobs it's really not that bad. I've done commercial roofing and now have a very high pressure white collar job. Given the choice, I'd stay home with my kids any day. They take naps, do adorable things, sit and watch a video if need be.....its not as bad as many claim. I am not belittling its importance. But stay at home moms have it pretty damn good.

They do. One of my goals is to soon be able to make that a reality for my wife. She'll be happier, which means I'll be happier, with all that entails lol.

At the same time, I know I couldn't do it myself. At least not effectively, I'm terrible at keeping a house up while trying to manage two small kids. It really just makes more work for her when she gets home.

Re: What Is The Hardest Job You Have Ever Held?
Ok ... Executive ... so you have to deal with losing 70K an hour, or the other one lossing half a million a day ...

So when I layout the footer and build the foundation out of square for a international corporations new building that is 500' long, what happens then? I guess millions of dollars worth of structural steel will "stretch" to reach in inbeds. It's not like I could have just cost my company a $50,000,000 contract for a skyscraper could I? Oh wait ...

You have severe mental stress at work. I don't doubt it. And traveling across the globe - yes it sucks. But don't act like we don't have the same mental punishment day in and day out. We just do it, all the while working a physical job. You have to be politically correct. When we fuck up, there are superintendents and business owners mother fucking each other over it. You don;t know stress until you get into large commercial construction.

Back when I was still in school, I was on a job for a former employer. We were troubleshooting a $40,000,000 solar panel plant. The plant was shut down for gas leaks and we went through the whole system, close to 10 miles, of gas-lines shutting systems down, pressure testing them, and addressing the most minuscule of leaks. It was costing them close to 90,000 per day that they were down. To say we were stressed and hustling to get the job done was an understatement. Executives from Germany were stationed here and actually up and left, abandoned their baby, until we got it fixed. They left their American counterparts stranded with design, documentation, prints, etc. all in German.

You're still only seeing one side of the picture. And while I do appreciate the story about the cabin (that is awesome ... stuff like that makes my day), and the fact that you can work with your hands - you fail to appreciate that the majority of those RUNNING WORK as a Foreman/Superintendent are the same way.

They work their brains in the field as hard as execs do in an office. There may not be many of us that can be employed using either our brains OR our bodies, but there are more than you think and are giving credit to.

That said, this whole busting my body up for someone else gig is a short term plan for me. I have been acquiring tools, equipment, and most importantly, experience. I will leave and start my own venture when the time is right, I am fully equipped, and financially stable to support such a move.

Working as a pro-government 911 shill ... honestly the pay is good but the material they have given us to work with is hard to convince people with.

How can I explain bldg.7 pancaking down onto its own footprint at free for all speed from office fires ????

I need new material ... hate this fucking job.

I worked in the maintenance department of my company and my job was to schedule job sheets for the maintenance men. The worst part was that I had to routinely check up on how the jobs were progressing while having to carry a Duncan Donuts coffee and a clipboard. But I did request a lighter clipboard and that made life easier.

The worst part is it's extremely unlikely that you'll move up from hod carrier to mason, you don't ever learn shit about laying because you're always running around getting their stuff.

You are correct, that position is only suitable for those poor souls with iqs bordering on retarded who couldn't do anything else.
