Fukushima fallout sickens U.S. babies
It's already well known how devastating the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear reactor meltdown was for Japan -- dramatic spikes in radiation-related illnesses, an increase in likely cancer deaths over the next several years, and pollution which may never truly be cleaned up. A new study shows what many worldwide have feared -- that the devastation from the traveling radiation has in fact sickened infants in other countries, including babies born shortly after the incident in Hawaii, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and California.

The study, conducted by scientists with the Radiation and Public Health Project, found that babies born shortly after the incident were 28 percent more likely to suffer from congenital hypothyroidism than were children born in those states during the same period one year earlier. In the rest of the U.S., which received less radioactive fallout, the risks actually decreased slightly compared with the year before. [link to healthyliving.msn.com]

Re: Fukushima fallout sickens U.S. babies
I personally have been hearing about people in the US developing mysterious bumps under their skin.

Unexplainable, in various places throughout their bodies...

Some are reporting them in the ERs of hospitals...

Going in for lets say a severe Headache and then telling the doc that have mysterious lumps under their skin on their head ; on top of their head and on the side of their neck....

This is a curious thing but it is happening in various cities throughout the US

The information in this article is false! The “Radiation and Public Health Project” is run by a group of activists who misrepresent facts to push a political agenda. There is no evidence, or reason to believe that radiation from the Fukushima incident has or will cause any negative health effects for anyone living in the United States.

Before the questioning of my credentials begins, let me mention that I am a radiation health physicist with multiple PhDs who has spent seven months in Japan since the tsunami studying the impact on human health caused by the release of radiation from Fukushima. Smiley

Elevated airborne beta levels in Pacific/West Coast US States and trends in hypothyroidism among newborns after the Fukushima nuclear meltdown

ABSTRACT

Various reports indicate that the incidence of congenital hypothyroidism is increasing in developed nations, and that improved detection and more inclusive criteria for the disease do not explain this trend entirely. One risk factor documented in numerous studies is exposure to radioactive iodine found in nuclear weapons test fallout and nuclear reactor emissions. Large amounts of fallout disseminated worldwide from the meltdowns in four reactors at the Fukushima-Dai-ichi plant in Japan beginning March 11, 2011 included radioiodine isotopes.

Just days after the meltdowns, I-131 concentrations in US precipitation was measured up to 211 times above normal. Highest levels of I-131 and airborne gross beta were documented in the five US States on the Pacific Ocean. The number of congenital hypothyroid cases in these five states from March 17-December 31, 2011 was 16% greater than for the same period in 2010, compared to a 3% decline in 36 other US States (p < 0.03).

The greatest divergence in these two groups (+28%) occurred in the period March 17-June 30 (p < 0.04). Further analysis, in the US and in other nations, is needed to better understand any association between iodine exposure from Fukushima-Dai-ichi and congenital hypothyroidism risk.

There is an old guy living right next to the Fukushima plant. He refused to leave the evac zone cause he wanted to take care of the abandoned animals.

He's like 70 years old and is doing fine. He is literally right next door to the plant and can see it. BBC or someone interviewed him and he and the animals are healthy as can be.

Before you say radiation has longterm effects, keep in mind he is living ON ground zero. If Fuku is so incredibly bad that its killing people 6000 miles away, then why isn't this elderly man suffering even the slightest of symptoms?

Doesn't make sense.

A good friend of mine was recently diagnosed with a rather large brain tumor. He is incredibly young and they are saying he doesn't have much longer. My uncle is undergoing chemo right now as we speak, he was recently diagnosed too. We don't live in the coastal areas so I'm not sure if that could be the cause, but I do recall something a little bit ago where someone tested the rain(I think last year maybe), and it was relatively high with radiation.
