Cooling system failure at Fukushima nuclear plant- twice this month now
[link to www.bbc.co.uk]

Part of the cooling system at Japan's tsunami-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has stopped for the second time in a month, the plant operator says.

After an alarm sounded at reactor number three, checks showed the system had stopped at one of the pools containing spent but highly radioactive fuel rods, Tokyo Electric Power said.

The breakdown is not thought to pose any immediate danger.

Last month a power cut shut cooling systems for four spent fuel ponds.

The company said a rat had damaged the electrics, causing a short-circuit in a switchboard and triggering the power cut.

Although the breakdown is not thought to be immediately dangerous, it served as a reminder of the precarious state of the Fukushima plant, more than two years after it was crippled by the giant tsunami of March 2011.

Last month, a wide power outage at the plant stopped cooling systems for four pools storing spent nuclear fuel after a rat interfered with the electrics.

As of 3 p.m. on Friday, the temperature inside the pool attached to reactor 3 was 15.1 degrees Celsius (59.18 Fahrenheit), indicating that spent fuel remained stable and was not posing immediate danger to the environment, according to TEPCO.

Another earthquake is gonna happen at some point, and that plant is gonna fall apart. There should be a global effort to make the place safe, and earthquake-proof, before it's too late.

You know, had this been any other kind of facility it would have been razed to the ground.

But no one knows how to deal with a busted up reactor, there's no where to dispose of it and no one wants to accept a problem that will outlast human civilization.

So, there it sits. Tepco probably is working on a scheme to unload the property to the taxpayers of Japan and until then there will be as little effort made as possible.

It's really a preview of what will happen as every other nuclear power station reaches the end of their useful lives. We see it at Palisades where the leadership had become detached from operations and I'm sure there are plenty of other examples throughout the industry, documented and not.

It's terrifying to think that so many other plants sit just waiting to become another Fukushima.

They need to just bury that place in sand and be done with it...

The sand will melt into glass and hermetically seal the rods.
