It's a problem in a lot of places. English as a second language has to be taken into account as well as time spent learning it.

It isn't correct to just punish and punish those trying to fix it. Especially if their hands are tied as to how they are allowed to teach, which they are in the U.S.

No, the kids aren't failing, the school is.

I'm a teacher, too. My school is 90% latino, about 30% ELL, etc, etc, etc. Guess what. With hard work, a great principal, great teaching and parent involvement, we now have the highest API* score (that's what's used in CA) in the district. We rank up there with schools in more affluent areas. We are an 8 out of 10 in CA. We have closed the achievement gap with all our subgroups. It can be done. You just have to have a vision, a plan, and dedication.

Our school is so good, I enrolled my son. My youngest will be attending as well in Sept.

BTW, those of you saying that CA schools suck...we practically have the HIGHEST standards in the nation...just go and look and see what 3rd graders have to do in CA (cde.ca.gov). In fact, we just got a kid in 4th grade who came from Texas....talks a lot...but is not on grade level. CA is switching over to Common Core Standards in 2014..we are ready because our content standards are already high...I feel for poor Alabama and other states...what a shock it will be to them!

They have a fix for low scores in Atlanta that works great!

Just get the principles and teachers to change the answers to the correct ones. Have a party and make a games out of it.

Of course you might want to keep that under your hat...

since most of those students are citizens of Mexico then why doesn't the U.s. demand some money from them to educate "their" kids? No, that would make too much sense.

It's not just ESL per se, it's that the ONLY place these kids need to speak English is at school, and then only in the classroom. My wife came to Canada knowing no English, and her family didn't speak English at home. But she learned English quickly because she HAD to. Nobody but her parents spoke Russian.

The California poster has a good point too, though. Kids like this can succeed if there's a will that they succeed.

I see y'all are conveniently ignoring the teacher from California.

That speaks volumes.

Its interesting the way we teach children, especially non-English speaking children = FAIL

My son is fluent in Arabic & claims that the way other countries teach children is immersion, in other words you can get a job in Japan teaching math & they don't want you to be able to speak Japanese, therefore the children must learn English to be able to understand their math school work
For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.
