The items missing to make that Star Trek world happen and do away with money are:

Replicators - Food, Clothing, Most complex shaped items etc.

Energy - Anti-Matter and portable power cells to power homes etc.

Transporters - get from one side of the globe to the other very fast and/or surface to orbiting ship.

Anti-Gravity - self explanatory.

Medical Tech - major leaps need to be made here though with the above tech available this should be possible.



With all these in place there will be no need for money and a communist govt would work ok - because nobody would have to worry about a place to live, the items they wanted could be replicated, food would be provided easily and getting around would be a breeze.

- they're working on replicators now, they can 3D print lots of things. I remember that the main objection to this technology when it was first suggested several years back was that eventually every home would have one and it would put the manufacturing industry out of business because they'd lose money!
