Putin vowed to continue supplying Assad the arms needed to defeat the rebels because "weapons supplies to legitimate governments is not illegal".

It's no secret whose side Putin is on in the Syrian civil war.

In the interview he explicitly said that Russia deserves the right to continue supplying Assad with weapons because there is no legal parameters not to.

Russia also enjoys military access to the Mediterranean thanks to the naval base at the Syrian port of Tartus.

He is telling the West to stop supplying the rebels because they're a terrorist entity determined to destabilize a "legitimate government".

The problem is that only a minority of those who are fighting this "legitmate government" are Syrian. Most part of the so called "freedom fighters" are ruthless mercenaries.

Very true. Some of them are from the Libyan Islamic insurgency that toppled the government there. I'd say some of the nasty ones from Iraq, Pakistani Taliban and also Afghanistan are undoubtedly there too.

The question is, who is worse? Assad or the Al-Qaeda insurgents?

That's what I think is worrying both sides.

That means NATO has to continue covertly supplying the insurgents and Russia has to keep overtly supplying Assad, but to a greater degree over time. That requires escalation.

Short of full-scale NATO military intervention in Syria, Assad has the air power and navy to ensure that he emerges the victor in this war.

The only thing that gets me is how far the rebels will go in tricking NATO into entering the war.
