Surprised at the ferocity of some of the storms up in Maine right now. Looks like a nicely formed Bow echo pushing its way northeast with a lot of rain with it.

Interesting to see a decent Tor-Con rating for the North East area, not a common thing.

Good morning everyone, sorry for the absence. Seems someone would find it amusing in banning me for some reason >< I missed reporting on that Oklahoma storm and how it ate the TWISTEX team :( But your Russian weatherwolf is with you now, most unhappy to use his karma to purchase some immunity.

If anyone is interested in our local weather update we had some strange storms yesterday with very heavy rain and hail for around ten minutes around noon. Then a gust front came through with some gusty winds, additional thunderstorms and heavy rain in the evening. Here's a picture of the hail I caught before it melted. Slightly bigger then a pea. Maybe around quarter size? [link to www.picshare.ru] Today will be much of the same with convection and thundery showers.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1231 AM CDT MON JUN 03 2013

VALID 031200Z - 041200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM THE SRN THROUGH THE CNTRL
HIGH PLAINS...

...SYNOPSIS...

PROGRESSIVE SYNOPTIC PATTERN WILL PREVAIL MONDAY WITH BELT OF FASTER
WLYS CONFINED TO NRN TIER STATES. UPPER TROUGH CENTERED OVER ONTARIO
WILL ADVANCE INTO QUEBEC...WHILE SHORTWAVE TROUGH OVER THE NRN
ROCKIES MOVES INTO THE NRN PLAINS MONDAY AFTERNOON. THIS TROUGH WILL
BE ACCOMPANIED BY A FRONT THAT WILL OCCLUDE OVER THE NRN PLAINS WITH
TRAILING COLD FRONT EXTENDING SWWD THROUGH THE CNTRL ROCKIES. LEE
TROUGH/DRYLINE WILL EXTEND FROM THE SRN THROUGH THE CNTRL HIGH
PLAINS DURING THE DAY.

...CNTRL THROUGH SRN HIGH PLAINS AREAS...

LOW-MID 50S DEWPOINTS WILL ADVECT THROUGH THE SRN AND CNTRL HIGH
PLAINS BENEATH STEEP MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES ALONG SLY LLJ EAST OF LEE
TROUGH. THIS PROCESS IN CONJUNCTION WITH DIABATIC WARMING WILL
RESULT IN AN AXIS OF 1500-2000 J/KG MLCAPE FROM WRN TX NWD THROUGH
CNTRL NEB...WITH THE GREATER INSTABILITY LIKELY OVER WRN TX. STRONG
DIABATIC WARMING WILL CONTRIBUTE TO DEEPLY MIXED BOUNDARY LAYERS
ALONG AND WEST OF THE TROUGH AXIS. STORMS WILL LIKELY DEVELOP BY
LATE AFTERNOON WITHIN ZONE OF CONVERGENCE AND WEAKENING CONVECTIVE
INHIBITION ALONG THIS BOUNDARY. BELT OF STRONGER WLYS WILL RESIDE
NORTH OF THE WARM SECTOR. HOWEVER...SELY WINDS VEERING TO WLY 30-35
KT AT 500 MB WILL RESULT IN 40+ KT EFFECTIVE SHEAR FROM NRN PART OF
WRN TX NWD THROUGH THE CNTRL PLAINS. HIGHER BASED SUPERCELLS WILL BE
THE INITIAL STORM MODE...BUT SOME OF THE ACTIVITY MAY EVENTUALLY
CONGEAL INTO LINE SEGMENTS AND CLUSTERS AND PERSIST INTO THE PLAINS
DURING THE EVENING SUPPORTED BY A STRENGTHENING LLJ. LARGE HAIL AND
DAMAGING WIND WILL BE THE MAIN THREATS THROUGH MID EVENING.

...SWRN TX...

OTHER STORMS WILL LIKELY DEVELOP FARTHER SOUTH OVER THE HIGHER
TERRAIN OF SWRN TX WITHIN AN ENVIRONMENT OF WEAK SHEAR...BUT STEEP
LAPSE RATES AND MODERATE INSTABILITY WILL SUPPORT A THREAT FOR
ISOLATED DOWNBURSTS AND LARGE HAIL. DUE TO WEAK FLOW ALOFT...THIS
ACTIVITY WILL PROBABLY SLOW TO MOVE OFF THE HIGHER TERRAIN.

Hello Luis hf Since the thread is so quiet considering US Severe Weather I'll add up some from Russia.
Pull out your maps everyone, we'll have a little Russian Geography class as well.

Here is a funnel cloud from Kaliningrad, doesn't really look that severe, but it's still a funnel cloud

And what looks like a supercell with a well-developed gust front and striations near Belgorod. [link to img-fotki.yandex.ru]

What looks like a very low wallcloud, or a possible wedge tornado funnel in Kaluga Region the 27th of May [link to savepic.net]

Some videos from the Efremov EF3 tornado in different stages

Tornado near Obninsk and it's nuclear power plant. Not very strong, but very beautiful.

I'd very much like to break misconceptions on both sides of the ocean that ti's just the US that get "Dem big, ol' scary twisters." Luis. Or perhaps that has been true for the last decades, but not any longer? Climate is changing, I can feel and I notice it. Can't say why though. That's way above my head.

yes for example here tornados were very very very rare events, but now, since 5 years ago we had them every year 4 to 6... last year the bigest ever, a F3-4...

Luis, can you find a sounding for 'Efremov', Tula Region for that day please? Let's analyze that together with the lovely people here. See if we can spot similarities and differences to say a Moore sounding? The station number is 27921. So far it seems they don't transmit WMO data :( Neither does nearby 27928 ('Elec' town). At least not for 22nd of May.

Hello Luis hf How severe could it get? Do we have any TOR-CON's yet? There was some kind of flooding after a dam broke somewhere in the States. They mentioned it briefly here. We have convection today. Pilots on approach to our local airport request avoidance courses. Not really thundering over our head yet though. On the bright side UVK doppler works again!
