I think the point has been that religion itself has been a tool to control us, which most people believe now anyway -- except this control truly came from something similar to the subject matter, rather than human... lust for power.

I wish I knew how the story ended, I do not.

It's not clear to me that it hates us, it certainly could have destroyed us during the Cold War, and most likely did the opposite. It hasn't been .. all loving though, and at times downright cruel.

Time will tell.
