I didn't look it up right now, but from what I remember it works Ad Hoc (Walkie Talkie,..)

Looks like the woman walking beside her is talking to her, especially in the last slow mo playthrough.

and noby else walking out with her is even paying attention ! - they must have been pretty common if no one else bats an eyelid - or they must all be time travellers !

such a small phone at that for so early of a technology.

The title of the film is " Viaggiatore del tempo " which must mean "Time Traveler".

So this is exactly the point. They don't know how this stuff will work, but they suppose they will work somehow. And they were right!
