This term "imminent" is getting out of control. I think GLP needs to take a vote on a timeline that defines imminent.

Imminent is later than immediate, but sooner than indeterminate.

I don't think the general population can understand that concept

I make it a point to never care what the general population can understand when I am defining or describing anything.

If I did, I'd be reduced to crayon illustrations.

The problem with your theory is all US military hardware including that give to our allies has been hardened against EMP from missile, solar flare, or otherwise since about 2005.

All tech, planes, tanks, ships, etc.

So there is that...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 36597376

Wrong.
Only very selective hardening has taken place.
 Quoting: The Comedian

Pardon my ignorance, but what does hardening military hardware entail?

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Homeland Security reports that missile test from North Korea is imminent
If we cannot even determine when they will launch or if they will launch and our intelligence is based on assumptions then I say we may be in some trouble. Our missile shield is 50% accurate which means if they launch 4 missiles 2 will likely hit. I am not overly confident in the idea that we will intercept with complete success..given the status of our missile defense. I do not understand how in the world we know this is a test when North Korea said the opposite. North Korea told people to evacuate due to all out war..do they belieeve war is imminent upon testing a missile? Was war imminent with each past missile test? Do they think this time is different or are they planning on something more aggressive in order to ensure that war will take place..???
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 37778691

It's not a test.
MSM is just saying that to keep people calm.
That North Korea is not issuing a test warning makes it clear that they do not consider it a test.
That they are using multiple missiles also tells you it's not a test.
That they keep threatening "thermal nuclear" also tells you that they o not consider it a test.

I think South Korea , the US and all others involved were hoping to trick him into just settling for a test.
The fact is that it is against the law for North Korea to conduct any such test with ballistic missiles and they are prepared to take action in the event it does.
The UN is prepared and on standby for if and when they do, to plan their response.
Kim knows that.
Not just a test.

SEOUL, March 8 (Yonhap) -- A North Korean general said Thursday that the country has placed long-range missiles armed with nuclear warheads on standby, as Pyongyang said it will not bow to the United Nations resolution condemning its latest atomic weapons test.

According to the Rodong Sinmun, an organ of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), Colonel General Kang Pyo-yong said soldiers are already positioned to launch a war of reunification if the order is given by its leaders. The paper said the general made clear at a speech given at a rally in Pyongyang that intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and other rockets capable of attacking pre-set targets have been armed with various types of atomic warheads.

As reported, a missile test from North Korea is imminent. Admiral Samuel Locklear III, Commander of U.S. Pacific Command, said the U.S. will not automatically intercept just any missile launched by North Korea, but will intercept those aimed at or expected to land in the U.S., its territories, or allies.
 Quoting: Gypsy Priest

In other words, any missile headed anywhere except Iran or N. Korea itself will be intercepted.

Or is this the kind of imminent that will keep the American people distracted from what is going on at home?
 Quoting: katballoo

It is a huge distraction. Has anyone been calling their Senators regarding the gun control bills that they are proposing.... no, cause everyone is watching Korea.

Is anyone pissed off because the White house is closed to tours because of the sequester yet the Prez is throwing parties and having Justin Timberlake serenade him???? No... cause we are being hyped into a frenzy about the bogey man who currently happens to be short squat Kim Jong Un. Well folks, what we really should be worried about is that fuck in the white house.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Homeland Security reports that missile test from North Korea is imminent
Re: North Korea has tested SUPER EMP WEAPON says former CIA Nuke Analyst
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, or FERC, has begun taking steps to protect the nation’s power grid from at least the natural version of an EMP by proposing new regulation standards addressing the impacts of a geomagnetic disturbance, or GMD.

As reported, the administration was scolded in congressional testimony last month for failing to prepare for the damage an EMP event could cause, with estimates suggesting the mass and prolonged power loss could making living in the United States “unsustainable” for 70 to 90 percent of the population.

The national power grid is not the only system that is vulnerable to space-based storms. Any networked system that can conduct electricity over long distances is vulnerable to electromagnetic disruptions.

Examples of these conducting networks are not only electrical power transmission grids, but also oil and gas pipelines, undersea communication cables, telephone and telegraph networks and railway systems.

GICs can also cause accelerated corrosion of pipelines as well as disruptions to geophysical exploration surveys and oil and gas drilling operations.

GICs caused a magnetic storm on March 13, 1989, in Canada. A GIC caused widespread electric power system problems, the most severe being a power-system-wide blackout on the Hydro-Quebec power system, with the damage extending as far south as New Jersey.

Large-scale blackouts can have serious economic impacts even if power is restored in a few hours. A four-hour major blackout in France cost over 1 billion dollars. In a study of the economic impact of a major blackout in the U.S., it was estimated that the cost of a blackout in the Northeast United States could easily exceed several billion dollars.

In a 2010 joint study prepared for the FERC, the Departments of Energy, Homeland Security and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory reported that GMD events can develop quickly over large geographic areas, having the capability to produce large outages and significant damage to electrical distribution equipment.

There is a fear among some government agencies that a geomagnetic storm could cause permanent damage to large transformers and long lead times until power is restored to the power grid.

In a recently released FERC report, any recovery of electrical systems could plausibly extend into months in many parts of an impacted region. The report notes that large power distribution transformers usually cannot be repaired in the field, and if damaged, would need to be replaced with new units, which have long lead times.

“The physical damage of certain system components (e.g. extra-high-voltage transformers) on a large scale, as could be effected by any of these threats, could result in prolonged outages as procurement cycles for these components range from months to years,” the report stated.

If these systems are damaged, it is anticipated that the affected area would suffer power rationing and rotating blackouts.

Further threatening national security, the technology for manufacturing these transformers is no longer found in the United States. The technology to manufacture this equipment now resides in Germany and Japan.

Estimates prepared by the National Research Council of the National Academies concluded that these events have the potential to cause widespread, long-term losses with economic costs to the United States estimated at $1-2 trillion and a recovery time of four to ten years.
