I believe it. My buddy's son has told him to watch out for the meteors every day as he left for work for the last 2 months. Kids are delicate, and when they hear scary things, they tend to freak out about it and let their imaginations run wild.

OP, you should ask him if he's heard this from anyone else. Kids repeat what they hear. If anyone else was stressed out about it while he was around, he could have easily picked up on that and repeated. If he hasn't heard it from anyone that should prompt you to ask him more questions. NOW if the kid doesn't speak Portuguese, then it is a WHOLE different ballgame.
