There wasn't anything wrong with windows XP, it was the best and most stable OS they had. Mandatory formats used to be common about every 6-12 months before it came along. Then they made Vista which was horribly slow (win 95 slow or worse) and after it bombed they ironed out the code and made 7 so we could have the flashyness but most of XPs speed. But even then, 7 isn't as fast as XP, people have forgotten, it just looks more bling and smoother I will give it that. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 37846622 get rid of metro and install the windows 7 explorer and you have the best of both! don't listen to the pc illiterate that don't know how to customise an os to perform like magic. It's true, 8 runs faster than 7 even on older hardware but it doesn't recover itself like 7 does, the few times that becomes necessary... I use the "classic skin" skin which gives me back a start button. I never have to look at the start screen, you can set the skin to boot to desktop etc. But it's a click away if I want to play with it. |

Plus windows explorer is the OS's most useful feature, and what to they screw up? You guessed it. XP is the best OS micro$hit ever came up with, and I see no reason at all to upgrade to ANYTHING. It does everything I need faster than anything else around. I'm sure micro$hit will make it tougher and tougher to stick with XP. I wouldn't put sabotage past them, but we'll go to linux entirely when the time comes. |

Obviously you don't have any idea what you are talking about. I love Ubuntu. I use Ubuntu. But you are wrong. I still have an XP box, and maybe always will, because we've used MagickJack for years, and gave up waiting for linux drivers, which will never come. There are several printers we have around here that absolutely will NOT work with linux. Also an old scanner with no linux driver. Don't mislead people. And installing apps is NOT as easy as Windows, and at times can be very difficult. And installing updates can break things. I can't tell you how many times I've had to re-install the whole OS, to the point that I don't allow my wife to update ANYTHING. Linux has a STEEP learning curve compared to Windows. But breaking free from micro$hit is worth the effort if you have the brains to become well versed in linux. I still don't think Granny or dense people should even think about trying linux. They'll never "get it". It still is not user friendly when something goes wrong. |

Currently codenamed Blue [link to www.latimes.com] Windows 7 is just Vista warmed over Windows 8 is just Windows 7 warmed over with a touch screen interface. My PC has a touch screen, came with Windows 8 downgraded to Windows 7. Touch-screens have been available for over 15 years. Stroking PC screens as a tablet will become the norm. I love my touch-screen pc. Will probably switch it back to Windows 8.1 in the fall when MSFT have bug fixed it. There are several apps that put the start button back and can disable the tiles (Metro / New UI) |

On a tablet it is a funny look, but it chokes on the hardware and leaves you in the dark after two hours. Its fullblown windows needed on any platform, not very clever. And who needs that tile crap on a desktop, anyway? Anybody? There is unfortunately no challenge for windows In the enterprise sector, so we will have the opportunity to make fun jokes about it for years to come. |
