Teens Abandoning Social Networks, Study Says
Facebook is the "most important" social media site for about 10% fewer teenagers than it was a year ago, according to a new PiperJaffray survey of over 5,000 teenagers. The teens surveyed are less interested in Twitter, YouTube, Google+, Flickr, and Tumblr too. Of the major sites included in the survey, only Pinterest has grown. (Instagram was not included in the survey in spring 2012).
This suggests something bigger than a shift away from Facebook; it hints at what could be the beginning of an across-the-board teen rejection of traditional social networking as a whole. But where are young people going? Read more [link to www.buzzfeed.com]

Facebook, whose success was built on the backs of a massive network of teens and young adults, must now grapple with its mainstream status and the user apathy that comes with such overexposure. In a recent survey of 13- to 18-year-olds, 61% of teens chose Tumblr as their favorite social network. Facebook, with its billion-plus users, came in second with 55% of the teen vote. Results were similar for young adults 19 to 25, with 57% choosing Tumblr as the top social network. At the risk of oversimplifiying, it would appear that Facebook — a place where you're now as likely to run into your grandmother as you are your friends — is no longer cool. They are not going anywhere. Facebook/social media is a waste of time and kinda boring. I guess people have realized this. I used to use facebook for staying in touch with friends and family. Deleted my facebook, not looking back.

They still use it, but perhaps not as much because their close friends are with them at school and activities all day long. They spend their weekends with their friends....why do they have to chat on FB?

I think the majority of people on Facebook are older...out of school, or those of us who have lost touch with old friends because we don't live near them anymore...also those of us who do not live near our children or relatives. We don't send prints of photos to people via the mail anymore like we once did. Everything is digital and sent online.

Nothing wrong with Facebook. I have found that the more sociable you are in person, the more you use Facebook. I'm in touch with friends all over the world. I read it everyday, but I don't post anything everyday....perhaps once a month or every two months.

Today I renewed a friendship with a family that once lived across the street from me. They moved away, and when you have kids and family, you keep busy with them...and do your own thing. As a result, we lost touch. Today I saw photos of her daughters who are adults now and have children of their own. Her daughters used to play with mine when they were 4 to 8 years old. It's so nice to be in touch again.
