Reconsider Eating Meat! What Government Found in Your Meat...
When you shop for turkey burgers for dinner tonight, you may be buying more than meat.

A recently released report from Food and Drug Administration found that of all the raw ground turkey tested, 81% was contaminated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Also, according to the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System, or NARMS, Retail Meat Annual Report, ground turkey wasn't the only problem. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria were found in some 69% of pork chops, 55% of ground beef and 39% of chicken.

In the meat NARMS tested, scientists found significant amounts of salmonella and Campylobacter -- bacteria that cause millions of cases of food poisoning a year.

Of the chicken tested, 53% was tainted with an antibiotic-resistant form of E.coli, the report said.
Certain strains of E.coli can cause urinary tract infections, pneumonia and other illnesses. Antibiotic resistance means if you were to become ill, doctors would have fewer drug options to treat you.

Some 29.9 million pounds of antibiotics were sold in 2011 for meat and poultry production, compared with the 7.7 million sold for human use, according to the Pew Charitable Trusts, and that number has been on the rise.

"Antibiotic use in animals is out of hand," said Dr. Gail Hansen, a veterinarian and senior officer for the Pew Campaign on Human Health and Industrial Farming

Currently, the law tracks only how many antibiotics are sold; it does not mandate data collection on how many animals are given the drugs or how much. Without that information, it is hard to know where antibiotics are used.

But, she noted, studies have shown a risk factor for salmonella in children riding in shopping carts near raw meat or poultry. "I think you can't be too careful," she said.

Western Style Diet makes you die young: Study

Adhering to a western style diet lowers a person's chances of achieving older age in good health and with higher functionality, according to a news release.

The latest study, published in The American Journal of Medicine, states that a western style diet, which includes fried and sweet food, processed and red meat, high fat dairy products and refined grains leads to a greater risk of premature death.

False

Washing Vegetables Doesn’t Remove E. Coli Bacteria

Even if a sanitizer succeeded in killing 99.9% of the bacteria present, that could still leave thousands of viable cells--and it only takes one to make you sick.

I wondered whether these very toxic strains of E. coli might be especially hard to kill. It turns out that they’re not really that invincible—they’ve just developed some very clever survival tactics. “If these E. coli bacteria were just floating around in a bucket of water, a little bleach or even some vinegar would kill them right away,” Dr. Brackett explains. “But once the bacteria have attached themselves to the surface of a vegetable, they become much harder to kill.”

When these bacteria attach to a surface, they produce a substance called “biofilm,” which encases the bacteria in a sort of shell and helps them stick to whatever they’ve latched onto. This coating keeps them from being washed away and also protects them from chemicals that could otherwise disable them. In other words, adding a few drops of bleach to the water you use to wash vegetables will kill any bacteria in the water but won’t do much to the bacteria on the vegetables.

E. coli doesn’t just sit around on the surface of vegetables, either. The bacteria can also penetrate into the interior tissues of the plant, where no sanitizer can reach them. And here's another reason that chemical sanitization can’t guarantee your safety: Even if a sanitizer succeeded in killing 99.9% of the bacteria present, that could still leave thousands of viable cells--and it only takes one to make you sick.

...avoid all uncooked fruits and vegetables, as well as unpasteurized dairy products, and be sure that all eggs, meat, and fish are cooked thoroughly.

-- Those who ate fried and unhealthy food had doubled risk of early death

-- Key culprits include red meat, white bread, butter, cream and sweet foods

--Findings 'help explain' why heart disease is still the biggest killer

The typical Western diet, high in fat and sugar, really does lead to an early grave, new research suggests.
A study of more than 5,000 civil servants found those who ate the most fried and sweet food, processed and red meat, white bread and butter and cream doubled their risk of premature death or ill health in old age.

Some of us butcher our own meat or buy it locally and know what it has been fed and what we're in turn, eating.

Advocating for the complete removal of meat from other peoples diets is in bad form.

And this is yet another reason to eat grassfed beef, wild fish, and organic free-range chicken. The more local the source the better off you will be. If you can get more of your meat from hunting, even better.
Just like you need to scrub your veggies, know your sources of meat. Of course the same people who demonize red meat are the same ones who only test mass farmed grain fed Monsanto products. I will be the first to say, yes that shit is supremely unhealthy and yes, grass fed makes a big difference.

Re: Reconsider Eating Meat! What Government Found in Your Meat...
What’s bugging your meat? Shit and antibiotics, probably

Take a deep breath, carnivores: 87 percent of supermarket meat — including beef, pork, chicken, and turkey products — tests positive for normal and antibiotic-resistant forms of Enterococcus bacteria.

Resistant or not, the mere presence of these types of microbes means the majority of our meat comes into contact with fecal matter at some point.

The threat of these superbugs goes beyond the academic. Three of the bugs listed above cause tens of thousands of illnesses and hundreds of deaths a year. Resistant salmonella-tainted meat recently caused several outbreaks, one of them quite deadly. And E. coli from supermarket chicken has been linked to millions of antibiotic-resistant urinary tract infections in women.

Medical researchers are all but begging livestock producers to scale back on the heaps of antibiotics fed to food animals every year — sound advice since 80 percent of all antibiotics consumed in the U.S. go to food animals — but the industry contends that such a reduction would be impossible. That’s true in a way: Most livestock would not be able to survive the cramped, stressful, disease-ridden conditions in which they are raised without a constant low-level dosing of antibiotics.

As an additional boon, these antibiotics seem not only to prevent disease but also to increase animal size and weight for reasons that are not well understood.

For now, it’s up to consumers to protect themselves from superbugs as best they can. As EWG concludes, they must “assume that all meat is contaminated with disease-causing bacteria.”

Increasing Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria: The Dangers

As Adams found, however, the bacteria on and in our food—not only poultry, but also meat, eggs, shrimp and produce—are getting harder to knock out. New, drug-resistant varieties of campylobacter, salmonella, E. coli and staph have all emerged. For those of us unlucky enough to catch one of these superstrains, the arsenal of drugs that work is smaller than it is for weaker strains, and treatment becomes more complicated once the bacteria have taken hold. As a result, previously minor infections are putting Americans in the hospital—and, in rare cases, killing us.

Although the link between farm-bred superbugs and stomach illness is most clear, researchers worry that food may be transmitting other illness as well, including drug-resistant infections of the skin, urinary tract and blood.

It isn't illegal if you hunt within the allotted seasons. And in my experience, you can't find a cleaner meat. I've eaten plenty of deer, squirrel, fish, turkey, and even rabbit. Never found a worm or parasite in the meat itself. If you hunt on your own private property then you don't even need a license (at least in my state, this could vary).

However I suppose you must be vegetarian and I respect that. You practice what you preach and honestly I would rather share a meal with you than someone who protests foods while eating a big mac. Do you do much organic gardening? I'm getting more serious about growing as much of my own vegetables and fruits as I can. I could use all the guides, tips, and tricks that I can get. Especially on natural fertilizers and understanding different soil types.
