You are both right. When I was in Kindergarden we all walked about 6 blocks to school. Would not happen today, should not happen today. We rode bikes without helmets, should not happen today - just too easy to prevent massive head trauma - why not have them wear one.

There are simple prudent steps to be taken and then, yes, let them out in the world, it is not worth HAVING children if you are going to be worried 24/7. Let them go ride their bike and scape their knee, but don't let them bang a helmetless head against the curb.

We don't live in a major downtown area or travel to one unless we have to. We also know our neighbors and watch out for each others' kids. Thus, we give our kids a lot of freedom to be kids. I am no helicopter mom.

However, I would not let my kids go into downtown DC or any other place that is being targeted right now. That's just responsible parenting.

We moved here from the Seattle are back in '07 & have been leasing. We're finally in going to be able to buy our own Home & we're going to be moving to the West side of I35, somewhere between Lake Bucannon(?sp) & Dripping Spring. A good bit cheaper away from Austin & we'll also be closer to my Father in law, 70 years old & has a bad heart. Wow, didn't mean to write a damn book ROFLMAO!!!

I did the same thing, only it was a day field trip to D.C. My kids are pretty upset, they do not fully understand, but it is for their own good. I promised that I would take them after soccer is done.
