Northwest Indiana Flooding !
I am here in Hammond, Indiana, just a little over a mile from the Chicago Illinois line. We are under a tornado watch, but our immediate disaster is the flooding. Some parts of my community and surrounding communities are totally flooded out, and it is getting worse. The Little Calumet River is starting to go over at spots, but even without the river overflowing, our streets are flooded. It is nearly impossible to get from one part of the city to another, or get to the neighboring communities. I woke up this morning to a flooded basement.I am glad I had the foresight to put the dog food and a couple of other things up a bit higher, but I still lost a lot of lumber for the projects that are ongoing here, plus a lot of other stuff. We have homeowner insurance, but we do not have flood insurance. My yard is flooded almost up to my house. My car is sitting in the middle of the flood waters in my back driveway, and I honestly am considering wadeing out to it, and getting it out of there, if possible. It is not up to the bottom of the doors, YET, but it is close.
The back portion of my daughters house across the alley from me is totally surrounded in a couple of feet of water. Her garage, where I keep grandpa's 1975 Caddillac, is surrounded by fairly deep water, and is inaccessable. :( Fortunately, my daughter has very little stuff in her basement, but it would be bad if she loses her washer and dryer, let alone the water heater and her furnace. They have no homeowners insurance at all. My son-in-law was out of work since December 2011, and didn't get another job until 3 months ago.
My mother is only 2 blocks from the river, and the main way to get to her house has been flooded out since early this morning. I will have to drive several miles out of my way, to go around and backtrack to get to her house. I hope her power stays on, as she is on oxygen.
I promise to come back to give updates on our situation here, off and on throughout the day.
Keep us in your prayers, my friends.

I'm a little east of you and it's not that bad here yet just a little waterlogged.

It seems that we are getting the brunt of it here. At least the tornado watches have been cancelled. Earlier this morning, the Calumet City and Lansing tornado sirens were going off.The south part of Hammond borders these 2 communities. The northern part of Hammond borders Chicago.

Re: Northwest Indiana Flooding !
My daughter got lucky, as she only had about an inch of water. We ended up getting flooded twice within about 4 hours. The water drained fairly well from the 1st round, but we got another downpour, and we got wet again. :(
Some of my neighbors have started to pile up their ruined furniture and belongings out in the alley for the city to pick up. It seems we all got our basements flooded. We saw several of our neighbors bailing out their basements when we took the dogs for a walk.
I had water coming out of the sewer and some pin holes in the basement floor.I am going to wait until the water in the basement drains away for the most part, before I make my own pile of belongings in the alley. :( I am not looking forward to going through all that muck in my basement.
The Little Calumet River is in moderate flood, 15.2 feet. If it goes up a couple of more feet, my mother will probably have to be evacuated.

Most of the water on my property has drained, and my basement has too. Believe it or not, it was snowing this morning. The river still has not gone down, and I am keeping a close eye on it.

Re: Northwest Indiana Flooding !
The river has gone down by 2ft this afternoon. We are fortunate, unlike the people in northeast Illinois.
