Brain Structures Differ between Musicians and Non-Musicians
We should have musicians as our leaders, they are way smater than the rest of us!

Brain Structures Differ between Musicians and Non-Musicians

From an early age, musicians learn complex motor and auditory skills (e.g., the translation of visually perceived musical symbols into motor commands with simultaneous auditory monitoring of output), which they practice extensively from childhood throughout their entire careers. Using a voxel-by-voxel morphometric technique, we found gray matter volume differences in motor, auditory, and visual-spatial brain regions when comparing professional musicians (keyboard players) with a matched group of amateur musicians and non-musicians. Although some of these multiregional differences could be attributable to innate predisposition, we believe they may represent structural adaptations in response to long-term skill acquisition and the repetitive rehearsal of those skills. This hypothesis is supported by the strong association we found between structural differences, musician status, and practice intensity, as well as the wealth of supporting animal data showing structural changes in response to long-term motor training. However, only future experiments can determine the relative contribution of predisposition and practice.

Musicians use both sides of their brains more frequently than average people

Supporting what many of us who are not musically talented have often felt, new research reveals that trained musicians really do think differently than the rest of us. Vanderbilt University psychologists have found that professionally trained musicians more effectively use a creative technique called divergent thinking, and also use both the left and the right sides of their frontal cortex more heavily than the average person.

Yeah I have been called weird or odd since I was little. I am a musician and all I hear in my head is really detailed soundscapes. I am a former drug addict , drugs are really common in music.

I was talking about the motor skills in a thread awhile back.

The practice and infinite hours playing an instrument eventually create a new space in which you exist.
You become the music.

You still think about what key you are in, time sigs and stuff like that... but the music/notes/riffs come without conscious thought.

Kind of hard to explain.

I guess it's like Bird said.
He said he got to the point to where he could start playing, in any key, on any note... and make it work.

He learned how to fly...

We are wankers who wreck the planet an' piss on each other, 'til half the world's starvin' an' the other half's busy findin' new ways to keep from noticin' it. That's the fuckin' limit've our potential, believe me.

Over the years, startling evidence has been unearthed revealing the existence of a superior race of beings who once inhabited our world. Travelers of the stars they arrived eons ago-and planted the genetic seed that would ultimately blossom into a remarkable phenomenon called Music...

I don't think they're talking about rock stars, although many of them are extremely intelligent.

Think classical musicians who play in an orchestra and read and play complex music.

Right. In the text they measured a difference between the three groups. But they mentioned the professionally trained musicians characteristics specifically.

Mm.. no.

If you are looking at your fingers... you don't get it.
You must play as a blind man would.
Some of the best musicians ever were blind.
It's a brain/finger sensory connection which transcends thought.
Week-end warriors would not usually achieve this.
Classical musicians reach a plateau in which they can
play any piece of music put in front of them in written form.
This is similar.. but different in that they are not usually good at improvisation.
A gifted improviser is not always a reader.. usually basic
number or chord charts for them.

A Nashville musician joke..

Q: Can you read music..?
A: Not enough to hurt my playing.

A lot of geniuses have used drugs... Watson & Crick used LSD and it helped them see the structure of DNA. Musicians usually have more creative, free flowing minds. They think outside the box, and sometimes they use drugs: that puts them in company with the majority of people under 60 yrs old. A lot of non-geniuses have drugs too. The person above (calling scientists people with nothing to do) is a fake, with nothing to do but post stupid comments.
