Violence in and of itself is not a bad thing.
Tilling the ground = violent
drilling for oil = violent
rocket lift off = violent
mother giving birth = violent

people thinking they can tell others what is best for them and when they refuse... YOU hurt them or kill them... or pay somebody to do it for YOU.

at the very least we need to clarify something. we can never have TRUE religious freedom. it is impossible. any religions whose tennets are against the law are not free and should not be free to practice! duh!

ie.. for instance we don't allow plural marriage (which i don't know seems a bit harsh in my opinion.)

religions would need to come out, vocally, and order their people to stop any practices against the law. and if the religion kept popping up with the same crime over and over they would loose their freedom to practice that religion in our country.

it would be up to the moderates within that religion to make sure it happened. because they would loose their charters as well.

Ban all ancient tyrannical ideologies and religions.

Millions of lives have been lost and taken for what? An argument over whether "my god" is better than "your god".

ALL organized religion is bad, it all is merely a huge power, money and sex oriented grab.

"We" kill them, they kill us, and many innocents who are just going about their daily business of surviving get caught in the middle and end up dead. Over what? An ideal ?

Islam has killed millions, Christianity has killed millions and the other sectual cults have done their share of mass murder and genocide as well. NOTHING good has come from any mass organized religion. This is a highly personal experience and either you get it,, or you don't. Either way it is NOT worth the taking of anyone's life to prove a non important point.

It's a theory. Plus there is still a missing link.

Banning something reinforces the perspective that is being denied. It's a common and effective nlp technique used often by governing bodies, including those here at glp.

Religion isn't the root of ALL violence, but it does more harm by dividing people and creating intolerance than any benefit that might come from it.

An immediate ban on religion would be like throwing gas on a fire - you can't change peoples beliefs with laws, and many would defend their right to practice their religion with their lives.

I hope someday most people will view religion as the control mechanism that it is, or at least as a primitive, simplistic explanation for things that previous generations couldn't understand.

Helping people to understand the difference between belief and knowledge is a good starting point. Blind faith and belief are encouraged by religious teachings, but they are not virtues that anyone should consciously aspire to. By definition, you believe something because the evidence is not convincing enough to "know" it. It is merely a hypothesis, and not something that should be forcefully promoted as an absolute truth.

We are all born agnostic. There is joy in the wonders of the unknown. Submitting to any religion limits one's imagination and closes one's mind to life's possibilities.

Atheism is a general disbelief in god(s), it is not an organized and well funded control organization with detailed instructions on what to think and how to behave. Banning atheism would simply be banning an idea, whereas banning organized religion would be banning groups that profit from the brainwashing of gullible people.
