A last minute alteration to the controversial Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) that would have prevented employers demanding that prospective employees disclose social media passwords as a condition of employment was voted down in the house of representatives. The proposal, put forward by Democrat Ed Perlmutter was defeated by a 224-189 majority, according to the Huffington Post. Handing over passwords could legally be a condition of acquiring or keeping a job, said WebProNews. Perlmutter said of his amendment before it was defeated: 'It helps the individual protect his right to privacy and it doesn't allow the employer to impersonate that particular employee when other people are interacting with that person across social media platforms. [link to www.dailymail.co.uk] Obviously dump facebook and disconnect totally, right? "With an eye made quiet by the power of harmony and the deep power of joy, we see into the life of things." William Wordsworth And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe—the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God. John F. Kennedy Inaugural Address Lincoln's economic advisor Henry C. Carey explained the universal issue in his 1851 Harmony of Interests: "Two systems are before the world.... One looks to pauperism, ignorance, depopulation, and barbarism; the other to increasing wealth, comfort, intelligence, combination of action, and civilization. One looks towards universal war; the other towards universal peace. One is the English system; the other ... the American system, for ... elevating while equalizing the condition of man throughout the world." "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." - Albert Einstein |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 36617538 Very, very true that! Lemme guess, next you'll have to hand over your non work related email account passwords? Forum passwords? Hell, why don't we make it so that every website and forum in the world will only accept your real name to get rid of those pesky anonymity laws...or what's left of them. I ditched FB years and years ago. You can too. And oh, CISPA may have passed, but you can bet freedom advocates already have lawsuits lined up. And then there is the pesky Constitution and rights to deal with, despite what the current admin believes. |

I know I'm sure as hell never giving away ANY of my passwords. That is not grounds to fire someone. That's like saying, "Give me the PIN to your Debit cards, or you're fired." Can't believe it. I will vehemently deny them any such request, and sue an employer that would try to use it as grounds for 1) firing me or 2) not hiring me. |

Why not ask for our online banking user info as well? Check out what you spend your money on every month. See how financially secure you are. Or your personal email account info, which is really not that much different than your facebook account, especially considering once you are logged into the account you can view all the private messages that you have sent/received. Is this going to be required for job applications? Put in your name address social security facebook password. I mean get the hell out of here this is insane. If this happens we are doomed, and any other personal privacy from at least entities other than the government is gone. Slippery slope if I've ever heard of one. I've made a huge mistake |
