My dog has gone blind, and a week later we had to put him down.
Over night. The doctors were giving him doxycycline for a tick borne disease. Overnight his blue eye turned a sick yellowish colour, and by the evening his brown eye was also gone.

New vet is diagnosing blasto. Not sure whether the old boy will survive, and if he does whether his sight will return.
We're currently treating him with atropine in one eye and a topical steroid in both eyes.

Poor dude.

I am really sorry to hear about that. I know how it feels to live with and love dogs. We have 6, wait, no 7 of them. But if you can, find another dog who can lead your dog around. They know and will help each other.

Good luck with this and I am going to say God Bless you and your canine family.

Wife and kids are pretty much broken up. I'm just pissed that the first vet didn't give the right diagnosis. Then again, it is often blasto is apparently frequently misread as leukemia.

Waiting on the urine test for blasto to come back.

We thought he had a sure death sentence yesterday.

I have a dog with really bad eyesight from birth. She uses her nose a lot more to get around, and gets to enjoy doing everything that the other dogs do on the farm off leash.

Hopefully they can save some of your dogs eyesight. But even if they don't, remember his sense of smell and hearing can make up the difference.

Re: My dog has gone blind, and a week later we had to put him down.
He's been a good dog. When we brought him home from the shelter as a pup he was a holy terror, destroying everything in his path. Chewed through the iron cord (thank G-D it was unplugged at the time) and destroyed wife's favorite pair of shoes.

After the shoe escapade wife said it was either her or the pup. Made frantic calls across the USA to see if anyone would take him. No takers. Finally took the lad back to the shelter. He was feeling mouthy that morning and nipped at the wrists of the attendant who informed me that he was "unadoptable" due to his mouthyness. "What the hell" says I,"he was certainly 'adoptable' six weeks ago when we paid your damned adoption fees". "The only way we'll take him back now is to put him down".

Needless to say, the lad came home and I think he must have realized that his death sentence had been communted because from that day on he quit his gnawing and destructive ways.

He's been a fierce defender of our yard having killed raccoons, possums, rabbits, squirrils, and very likely scaring off drunken mexicans on more than one occasion. Truth be told, he's also something of a rogue and has come close to being arrested more than once after figuring out how to open our gate.

I said a prayer for your dog. I hope everything turns out OK.

For what it's worth, our cat went blind when he was 19-years old, and he got around very well. You'd never even know he was blind. It's something that animals handle much better than humans.

First vet I wouldn't want to treat my neighbor's cockroaches. She had already made up her mind. The second vet spent almost two hours with us going through the different possibilities.

To be fair, the doxy made things worse so that the blasto symptoms became dominant.

You know, my dog, Rambo was diagnosed with Parvo when he was a puppy by my vet. He told me to take him home and expect that the last 24 hours were his last. I went home and found a site from Canada called ParvoGuard and got it sent to me overnight. He started the treatment the next morning and by 4-5 that evening he was eating food on his own and drinking water.

There are still miracles out there. you just have to find one. There is something for your dog and just waiting to help you. I hope you are both blessed and with sight. Sometimes the sight is not always in vision.
