Pretty please Help with Hives question! Driving me crazy!!!!
I have googled like a wild banshee because my doctors are not helping much.

Quick synopsis:

About 4 weeks ago got a bad bladder infection. Went on 500 mg cipro for a week. Infection seemed to go away but a week later returned. Went back in and they put me on 750mg cipro for a week. They called and said it was staph arouras (sp?). Common I guess. She said to stay the course and it would clear up. About five days into this course I started itching above both my knees. Thought it was from briar cuts (I was in the woods this week). Then it was on the back of my knees and inner thighs. Little hive welts.

Well, I thought maybe it was from a sunburn I got that day...and being on the cipro. Makes sense. But later the hives would pop up under my arm and on my waist, here and there. Almostt like bug bites.

Went to doc a week ago. Puts me on Claritin and prednisone for a week. They start to go away. But two days after i finished the steroids and they are freaking back! Same areas too. But I will still have a few pop up in new areas.

Doc had said that I was on too much antibiotics (different doc than prescribed) and that it wiped out my good bacteria also. Well, the steroids didn't help. Now I'm getting them back.

So what is up? Anyone??? Serum sickness? Sun toxicity? Docs blow off any of my google dx.

Anyone? I am freaking out and making it worse I suppose. I'll bribe with green karma! I have a few left to hand out! ;-)
hf

And on a side note, can any mod help me find my old avatar? I changed the other day and now can't find it. :(((.

No answers here without looking, but 2 suggestions,

1. rebound hives when you stopped the prednisone. Just means it worked, but you need more.

3. It was never hives, but poison ivy, since it started on your legs. The pop-up itchies could have spread early in the game and are still showing up.

We have a wonderful dermatologist because we need one in this household.

Amazing what doctors DO NOT KNOW about skin lesions.

cold compresses on your legs, calamine lotion, and dabbing the itchy places with a dot of vinegar might help.

The last works on mosquito bites.

Sounds like a drug reaction to the Cipro. You should not take it again and always list it as an allergy. A second reaction could result in much worse symptoms.

My suggestion is talk to your doctor about getting back on the prednisone. Perhaps a week was not long enough.

Also consider topical solutions for the itching. My favorite is Benadryl spray. The spray works the best for stopping the swelling and itching caused by the hives.

Lastly, try something to detox your system like a green tea or something. I'd consult a local health food store.

Eat a lot of yogurt to get the good bacteria back in your body.

Quicker way would be Acidophilus supplement, here is some information:

[link to www.vitaminpros.com]

And take some benadryl for the hives when needed, will help reduce itchiness and should bring them down in size, should notice a big difference in 3 to 4 days.

OMG. I was wondering about poison ivy. But nothing was out yet. Although some of our property in the woods had burned down that week and I later had walked thru the ash in shorts.

These welts are still popping up. They started in the sunburnt areas of my body... Hands, thighs and behind knees. Hand ones are gone. Knees went away. But coming back on inner thighs and now a couple little welts on my waist. 3 weeks later!

It's weird because the welts were in the exact same spots on both my legs. Oh and my ears are hot to touch and kind of itchy. Typical little raised white welts that kind of band together when scratched. The ones on my hands never came back.

For any type of itching irritation I use (extra virgin) coconut oil for immediate relief. It can provide relief for anywhere between a few hours to a full day. Just reapply as needed.

Plus for a long term antihistamine... You can try black seeds or black seed oil. This would be the equivalent to Claritin.

My son had this after I drug reaction so stopped the drug, then he took antihistamine and carried on taking it a few weeks after the reaction. Got to wait till the drug that caused them to get out of the system, do t stop taking the antihistamine when they look like they have gone keep taking it for a few weeks. Drink plenty of water to.

Ok so I thought about this. I've been on cipro before. Np. Then the first dose of cipro I didn't have hives. It was the second week when I had to go back on it at a higher dose.... About four/five days it started, and that was when I got a bad sunburn because I forgot about the sensitivity to cipro.

I am allergic to amoxicillin though.

I've googled sun toxicity from medication and serum sickness hives when you've been on a med too long.

I don't know who to go to now. Doc? Allergist? Immunologist? Yeah I'm kind of freaking out.

Make sure your Doctor has considered serum sickness, especially if you have had any joint pain or fever related to this episode.

"Although true serum sickness has been reported for years, serum sickness-like reactions are now seen more frequently following therapy with a variety of medications and are most frequently noted with the beta-lactam antibiotics (9;National Disease and Therapeutics Index [Database], 1985).
This case report describes the temporal relationship between a serum sickness-like illness in an adult and ciprofloxacin. The onset of clinical signs and symptoms correlated only with ciprofloxacin administration. No other medications reported to cause this syndrome were used, and all diagnostic studies failed to reveal any other cause for the
illness."

[link to aac.asm.org]

"The following case report is of a possible serum sickness-like reaction secondary to ciprofloxacin use, a commonly prescribed antibiotic in the US. A 62-y-old female developed polyarthralgias, myalgia and a generalized urticarial rash following 5 d use of ciprofloxacin"

Back in the early 90's I was running a warehouse and ended up with a chunk of oil soaked wood from a pallet that came in from China...A BIG chunk of wood, as it went through both sides of my wrist...

Had it removed, but they missed a 1/4"x 1/2" piece that stayed in for a few months...I found it under the skin, and had them remove that too, and thought all was well...Developed Giant Urticaria (hives) within a couple of months of healing...Prednisone knocked em down, but did not kill them...Many courses of seroids, and other shit later, I found a doc that gave me a cocktail of Hismanal and Axid...Fist is an H1 antihistamine, and the 2nd is an H2 anhihistamine...

The combination killed my hives in a week, and they have never returned in 20 years...

Both of those drugs are off the market (which sucks), but tell your Doctor to look into current H1 and H2 blockers as a cocktail for you, and specifically tell him to reference the cocktail for hives in his research...

Good luck, and I sincerely hope it helps!

Crap crap crap. You walked thru the ash. . . well, I am not sure how much urushiol (the stuff in poison ivy that makes you itch) would survive in ash, but

it survives just fine in smoke - and causes terrible cases of poison ivy in people's lungs.

This makes me think it might be poison ivy.

BUT the poster who said it could well be a reaction to the Cipro is also right.
It does not matter how many times you have taken it without any problems in the past, it IS possible to develop an allergy to a drug at any time.

To be safe, do not take Cipro or other quinolone class antibiotics WITHOUT telling your doctor all about this.
Hope you feel better very very soon.hf

Re: Pretty please Help with Hives question! Driving me crazy!!!!
Have you tried loads of vitamin C?

Do you have any other allergies or autoimmune disease?
How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world?

No answers here without looking, but 2 suggestions,

1. rebound hives when you stopped the prednisone. Just means it worked, but you need more.

3. It was never hives, but poison ivy, since it started on your legs. The pop-up itchies could have spread early in the game and are still showing up.

We have a wonderful dermatologist because we need one in this household.

Amazing what doctors DO NOT KNOW about skin lesions.

Thanks beeches!

Ok. Thank you. Seriously helpful, if anything, comforting to talk to you all and much better than drinking at this point. Lol. :)

It's the antibiotics. You put poison into your body and now it's revolting.

Next time you have a UTI. Take D-Mannose.

You need to detox. No sugar, no grains, no legumes, no processed foods. . Let your body heal. Stop throwing more chemicals on top of it.

I would start out with the dermatologist. If needed, they can refer you out to an allergist or immunologist.

I know what you are going through, I am allergic to bug bites and the pain, itching and swelling is miserable.

Hope you get better soon.
Life is forever changing. Prepare and beware.
