Re: Pretty please Help with Hives question! Driving me crazy!!!!
I find it difficult to believe that one can not tell the difference between a fluid filled pustule brought on by contact dermatitis (poison ivy), and hives...

scratching
 Quoting: SnakeAirlines

I don't know about poison ivy. I know we have it in that area. I walked thru ash that day. Not sure if it is still potent in ash. None of the vines were out yet. Too early. The doc said they were hives. They are def hives, until I itch them. They come and go also. Driving me nuts. No fluid pustule. It itched and when scratched it turned to white welts.... Just like hives look. Just not the seriously long deep welt in a serious reaction.

We are really rooting for you, PENG.
That itching should go away NOW
and a clear cause emerge so you don't have to play detective.

My daughter had poison ivy from track and field. They ran over a newly mown field, and it started to itch that night.

Another daughter was treated for hives. No improvement. She got a sort of reddish look to her, and allover tiny bumps.
It was panfollicutis,
an all-over infection in her body's hair follicles.

Go figure. That went away just fine with an antibiotic.

the daughter with the poison ivy had an allover rash when she was six weeks old.
it was terrible to look at.
The on-call doc that weekend put her on 5 meds.

on Monday, our own doctor took her off all the meds and told us it would go away. It did.

Sounds like a drug reaction to the Cipro. You should not take it again and always list it as an allergy. A second reaction could result in much worse symptoms.

My suggestion is talk to your doctor about getting back on the prednisone. Perhaps a week was not long enough.

Also consider topical solutions for the itching. My favorite is Benadryl spray. The spray works the best for stopping the swelling and itching caused by the hives.

Lastly, try something to detox your system like a green tea or something. I'd consult a local health food store.

Ok so I thought about this. I've been on cipro before. Np. Then the first dose of cipro I didn't have hives. It was the second week when I had to go back on it at a higher dose.... About four/five days it started, and that was when I got a bad sunburn because I forgot about the sensitivity to cipro.

I am allergic to amoxicillin though.

I've googled sun toxicity from medication and serum sickness hives when you've been on a med too long.

I don't know who to go to now. Doc? Allergist? Immunologist? Yeah I'm kind of freaking out.
 Quoting: PENG

I would start out with the dermatologist. If needed, they can refer you out to an allergist or immunologist.

I know what you are going through, I am allergic to bug bites and the pain, itching and swelling is miserable.

Hope you get better soon.

Thanks a bunch. I think my stress is making it worse for sure.

Re: Pretty please Help with Hives question! Driving me crazy!!!!
I don't know if this has been suggested yet, as I didn't read every reply. My doctor always suggest taking a OTC Pepcid, (I hope I can say that). As a teen I used to break out in hives at random times, places on my body, doctor after doctor couldn't give me a good reason. Allergies of some sort. I'm apparently allergic to everything outside, but not all the time, just sometimes. Crazy huh? Take the allergy meds and Pepcid, he says if your body is breaking out on the outside, your tummy is doing the same. It works for me, maybe it will work for you! Good luck, and try to relax, stress seems to make it worse! Oh and my husband gets poison oak/ivy if he is even near the stuff. He is highly allergic, he gets a steroid shot and takes the Pepcid as well, per docs "theory". Like I said, if its happening on the surface it's also happening internally as well.

Use corticosteroid cream
Apply cool compresses to the affected areas
Bathe in Epsom salts or baking soda
Soak in colloidal oatmeal baths
Apply baking soda paste to the rash (made by stirring water into baking soda until it reaches a paste-like consistency)
Use an anti-itch lotion

I never had a thyroid problem until I had my first baby. They call it something... When hormones go out of whack and don't go back to normal after you give birth. That's how I got it. That was about 13 years ago. My temp is alway 97.3-97.6. A bit lower than normal.

I don't know. I had a lot going on the week I got them. Lots of stress, bad UTI, bad fire in woods which I walked thru the next day, antibiotics. God only knows. I just wish it would go away.

Love your disclaimer. OK, so low thyroid is hypothyroid which is mostly caused by hashimoto, which is an autoimmune disease.

When you are autoimmune, you have a th1/th2 immune system imbalance.. These imbalances make you more likely you be allergic and also make hives.

"An autoimmune condition occurs when one branch of the immune system over dominates another branch. This is called an either a Th1 or Th2 dominance. A dominant TH1 response means that the natural killer cells and cytotoxic t cells are responsible for attacking the body, while a TH2 dominance indicates that your bcells and antibodies are mounting the attack. A blood test is needed to find out which branch is dominant. Thus to treat an autoimmune disease, it is critical to find the dominant branch and to balance the seesaw by stimulating the other branch. For example, if a patient’s autoimmune disease was TH1 dominant, treating it would require that we strengthen the Th2 side to balance out the immune system. If the patient were Th2 dominant, we would stimulate the Th1 side to regain balance. It’s a pretty simple solution, but so many people suffer needlessly because the immune system has been ignored, until now.

This is where clinical nutrition and natural medicine comes into play. It is well documented in clinical research that Th1 stimulants are Echinacea, maitake mushrooms and golden seal to name a few. Th2 stimulators are caffeine, green tea, and grape seed extract. So in the example I gave in the previous slide, if a patient with an under functioning thyroid is TH1 dominant, then I would prescribe supplements containing caffeine, green tea, and grape seed extract to stimulate the TH2 side to regain balance. If they were TH2 dominant, then Echinacea, mushrooms, and golden seal would balance out their immune system. Since most people with autoimmune conditions have no idea which branch of their immune system is dominant, they can actually make their condition worse by taking over the counter immune boosters. Lets say for example you were Th1 dominant and you catch a cold. A friend tells you that Echinacea helped them so you take it yourself. Unknowingly you would be flaring up your already dominant Th1 response and cause even more destruction to your thyroid gland

Re: Pretty please Help with Hives question! Driving me crazy!!!!
I have googled like a wild banshee because my doctors are not helping much.

Quick synopsis:

About 4 weeks ago got a bad bladder infection. Went on 500 mg cipro for a week. Infection seemed to go away but a week later returned. Went back in and they put me on 750mg cipro for a week. They called and said it was staph arouras (sp?). Common I guess. She said to stay the course and it would clear up. About five days into this course I started itching above both my knees. Thought it was from briar cuts (I was in the woods this week). Then it was on the back of my knees and inner thighs. Little hive welts.

Well, I thought maybe it was from a sunburn I got that day...and being on the cipro. Makes sense. But later the hives would pop up under my arm and on my waist, here and there. Almostt like bug bites.

Went to doc a week ago. Puts me on Claritin and prednisone for a week. They start to go away. But two days after i finished the steroids and they are freaking back! Same areas too. But I will still have a few pop up in new areas.

Doc had said that I was on too much antibiotics (different doc than prescribed) and that it wiped out my good bacteria also. Well, the steroids didn't help. Now I'm getting them back.

So what is up? Anyone??? Serum sickness? Sun toxicity? Docs blow off any of my google dx.
Except for the Claritin, this same EXACT thing happened to me this week- STILL trying to get over it! HORRIBLE!!!wtf
Anyone? I am freaking out and making it worse I suppose. I'll bribe with green karma! I have a few left to hand out! ;-)

THIS ^!!!! Grandma, same thing. There is a very high correlation of Prednisone and Cipro complications---benadryl over time adds to this complication.

Bottom line, it is a clear case of a lowered immune system.

Check out Low Level Naltrexone. It works...for most all...
Tricks increased growth hormone and just about all other hormones and their functions which are directed by the brain control center. Few side effects compared to the extant symptoms.

It is a new idea which the pharmacuitcals have dissed as it works, is relatively cheap and almost generic.

HA! I got everyone here beat. I got the hives when I was pregnant with both my children! Turns out I was allergic to being pregnant actually! I had them on my hands and feet. for some reason hot water makes them itch even more. You will scratch yourself raw if you don't get something for it. They gave me Benadryl back then, they cleared up as soon as the children were born, both times.
My doctor swears he's never known a woman who was actually allergic to being pregnant!

Re: Pretty please Help with Hives question! Driving me crazy!!!!
Went through something similar last year. cortizone cream few times a day, lightly, allergy pill daily, plenty of water, and don't itch!

Itching seems to make it take longer to go away. Cold washcloth as needed.

Time is the only thing that really works, your system has to get whatever you reacted to, out of your system. And for a while your system will be over-reactive, so the hives may come and go randomly. It took about a month to clear out of me, and happened to me twice, becuase I didn't believe the lotion I had used was truly the culprit...until I used it again! The second time was so much worse!
I should have gone directly to the hospital, but I had a pack of predinsone pills I didn't use the first time around, so I took them within hours. Still, after 5 days of those pills, my arms were heavily covered in hives and swollen to the point of skin stretching in pain.

Time healed it.

Have you checked your PH level?

My mother broke out in hives often, and her research led her to finding out that she had a very acidic body, which caused a lot of problems, hives included.

I would seriously consider getting some ph strips and testing your urine. I don't have any links for you but you can find many grocery store remedies that can get your body in balance.

I have had that kind of reaction to antibiotics a couple of times -- it does sound like allergic hives (not likely serum sickness, which I have also had -- you generally get a fever and terrible body pain with that.)

For itching, the best thing in the world is a paste of baking soda and water -- put it right on the itchy areas ... it's messy, but it kills the itch almost immediately.

Try not to scratch, avoid tight clothing (pressure makes hives want to pop back up) and take an antihistamine regularly. Drink a lot of water -- that helps. You can add natural apple cider vinegar into your water which helps a bit, too.

Bathing in water with colloidal oatmeal and/or baking soda helps a lot if you have a bathtub.

Took about a month for mine to really go away -- they popped up episodically for weeks, any time something irritated the area (heat, sun, pressure) -- it's miserable, and I am sorry you are going through this.

i know what u talkin bout
i had hives on my inner thighs

#1 baby oil! helped with the itching and prevented the scratching from making it worse

half water/ half hydrogyn peroxide spray

rubbing alcohol
apple cider vinegar

fast for a few days

probiotics help, that's for real,
duh, you took antibiotics (anti life),
i think that's how i got my problem,
so take probiotics (pro life)
or some real yogurt/ keifer or both

cold showers (i took a lot)

this also may have helped a lot - sweating!

(i was also drinking a lot of gatorade and powerade,
so maybe that'll help?)

Re: Pretty please Help with Hives question! Driving me crazy!!!!

I can do this. They sell them at the pharmacy here.

I am going crazy. Mainly because something is wrong in my body obviously and I can't figure it out. I placed another call to the doc today.

Coconut oil worked better than the Benadryl cream. Thank god. But they still are popping up. I am taking the acidophilus powder now. I also poured apple cider vinegar after my shower. Nice smell. Lol.

I stopped 5ks thinking the heat was bothering it..... Doesn't matter. Still popping up either way. Erg. :(

Thanks for your help! If I figure it out, I'll let ya know.
